Besides its called "atmosphere" and Detroit has it in spades!  But if you compare it to Cincinnati/Toledo/Trenton New Jersey/Gary Indiana etc basically any other
Rustbelt city of the Midwest/Northeast they all are looking pretty bad..Detroit was one of the biggest and never has recovered from the riots and the recession and the Democrat/liberal big .gov policies that have killed it.As well fixing the city up and spending millions on downtown yuppy attractions when the neighborhoods dont even have streetlamps that work doesn't seem to help much.Buldozing the crack houses/blighted properties is a start but the city will probably never be fixed in my lifetime. But anyways all off topic! LOL! FWIW If you're NOT staying "downtown" in the city proper there are plenty of other places in the surrounding cities " Detroit Metro area" to go to..without dealing with the bad old city!
Royal Oak/Ferndale /Farmington Hills/Novi/Bloomfield Hills/Livonia/Plymouth/Northville Twp etc. are all somewhat upscale very nice/safe cities with decent restaurants/bars and nightspots to be found at. Like I say if you are from there/work down there or have friends or relatives that live around there you tend to shrug the scary factor and just bitch about the potholes in the roads and the freeway bridges falling apart.Worst thing that ever happened to me downtown was sitting on jury duty all day down at Frank Murphy hall of justice and out of pure boredom watching them tow the illegally parked cars in the lot. Nope didint have to serve they sent me home without even an interview. You always stay cautious in the city and be aware and as I stated previous I always CCW'd when I could especially if we were "out on the town" for the evening or I had to pick my Fiancee up from the hospital in the middle of the night or early early morning hours. Stay out of the neighborhoods/the "zombie zone"s (desolate outlying areas between downtown and the hoods) and away from the druggy/pan handler types you see on the street and MYOB and move on. DONT STOP FOR GAS DOWNTOWN..the trend lately is carjackings at the gas stations.If you ARE staying in one of the fancy hotels down there stay in the tourist zones where you see the cops/ fellow tourists etc don't be out late alone walking on the streets.It's like New Yorkers have a certain attitude to live there, so do Detroiter's. basically don't act like prey or you can expect to be hunted ...See, no worries LOL!

Anyways this is the "Iron Chef place" they opened up supposed to be real good..Roast restaurant FWIW the worst thing that happened to her (well long before she met me that is LOL!) downtown was when late night coming home from work and she got a flat tire in a bad area and a kid fixed/changed it for her for free ...the kid wouldn't take any money for fixing it. Gotta love Arf...so many Resident "Somalian warlords" all scared of D town!
