All the major ammo brands make a jacketed hollow point defense round.  Pick the brand you like, they're all close enough that the shooter will make the difference, not the bullet.

IMHO

According to Ruger, be sure that you don't run any ammo labeled +p in it.  I know there is no saami spec for +p .380, but the owner's manual does mention it.  When Ruger first introduced the LCP there were several examples posted of folks blowing them up.  I use Speer Gold Dot, it's been very reliable and it's as accurate as I can be with the gun.

ETA Page 12 of the owner's manual, it states it twice in red text.

There you go. You want a bullet that expands as large as possible *while still hitting sufficient and consistent penetration*. With the .380, that doesn’t give you much expansion, but while expansion is nice, penetration is necessary. The XTP is the best .380 bullet, that I’m aware of, at this balancing act.

I carry an LCP while I'm running. Honestly though, I hate 380acp. I've always carried ball ammo, assuming that it has shit for penetration.
I need to look in to the XTPs, I guess.

85 gr Sivertip works great. ........................  on cats. Before anyone gets bent the family has multiple cats. I like them inside but feral outside cats not so much.

My uncle was caretaker at a country club. It was great had the run of the place during the week in the summer.

Twice we had a cat that acted aggressive toward members in the parking lot.

Shot one broadside and you could see it just under the skin on the off side

My uncle was 90 degrees from me and he said he could swear he saw the skin stretch out a good bit.

I cut it out after putting gloves on and it expanded huge.

No way would these penetrate on anything above 15 to 20 lbs.

The other was shot head on and didn't exit either.

These where from the mid 90 s  when they whee writing how great they performed.

Has anybody mentioned XTP's yet?

Because that's the best .380 available...Hornady American Gunner is extremely well priced and performs to FBI spec for penetration and reliable expansion.

Last I checked, gold dot was a great choice.

On the off chance I have the 380 in my pocket, or when the wife has it, I'm confident that it will do what's needed.

I carry Hornady Critical Duty in my LCP 1st gen. According to some tests I’ve seen they perform very well out of this gun, even better than the XTP loads.

If I couldn’t carry them I’d opt for the Fiocchi loading using Hornady’s XTP bullet.

I also have been known to carrry Buffalo Bore’s standard pressure hard cast loads.

I have shot mine with and carry it with the Underwood +p with the XTP bullet.  Probably shouldn’t since it is +p.

I carry the Fiocchi Extrema because of the Shooting the Bull tests of .380 ammo and a few years ago when I bought it we were still somewhat in the .380 ammo drought.
When I came across some online at Target Sports I snapped up ten boxes for a really great price.
The next day I decided to order a few more boxes and it was gone....

Choose a round, fire a few boxes through the LCP and see if it's reliable. Back when I owned a Ruger LCP, my carry round was Hornady 90gr XTP.

Polycase is light, super fast, hardened bullet that doesn't expand.  I carry Critical Defense, but I experimented with Polycase and was impressed.  With its notches, and speed (thus speed of rotation), it "weaponizes" soft tissue and bodily fluids.

I have a video of me shooting a watermelon with an LCPII using Polycase.  It blew the watermelon completely in half.  Interior was largely liquified, and seeds were embedded in the hull.  I have the video on my phone.  I'll try to figure out how to get it on ARFCOM.

I settled on Critical Defense because of reliability and excellent ballistic tests on Lucky Gunner.

HPR or Sig Ammo 100grn fmj and shoot the the gun often. Paper plate or 1 pound coffee can at 7 yards and I'm content with what purpose this device is for.
