You all sure have bad luck with animals. You should consider adopting leftist politicians instead.

I'd pay the vet to do it cleanly and humanely. If for some reason that were not available I would go for massive overkill. Like 00 buckshot to completely destroy the CNS and ensure a humane if messy death.

.22 point blank to the base of the skull. It will flop around a bit but you don't need to waste a second round. Dig the hole first and wear some old pants.

Standard man stuff.

Yes, I'm that guy who had his son's cat die in a dishwasher.

But seriously, my daughter's cat from that same litter caught FID recently, and is less than a year old.  Per the vets $375 bill, it's a 100% terminal version of Coronavirus where she has days to weeks to live.  Ultimately, she will die of multiple organ failure.

There is an unlicensed drug called GS-441524 that has an 84% cure rate, but you have to buy it on the black market from websites.  It's basically Remdesivir made in China, and costs $900 for a treatment over 84 days of SQ injections and pills.

https://www.curefip.com/

Should I spend $900 on an outdoor cat my daughter raised from a kitten, or let it go to the woods to die, or spend money to put it down, or just give it a .22 round and put it out of it's misery as enough money was already spent?  She was tearful last night over the news, and has spent today making pictures to place on the cats grave, and knows if she sees her coming around the house to say her goodbyes.
View Quote

We did that treatment after one of our cats (also less than a year old at the time) was diagnosed with FIP and it worked for us. Two years later she couldn't be healthier. Best money we ever spent. If you want any more info or have any questions feel free to reach out. That doesn't seem likely since you're considering letting it die in the woods or shooting it, but I thought I'd say something just in case you were seriously considering it.

The first part is $100.  The second part can be another $250 and up...and that is without their upsell of a fancy box.

As for .22 option, if the shot isn't perfect you get to watch it flop around, spasm, and splatter blood everywhere for about 30 seconds.  That's fine for wild animals that are a nuisance but not the best memory for something a person may care about.

You need a new vet.

We were going to have our dog put down & cremated.  Vet quoted us like $95 for it all.

Dog ended up dying on its own and the vet cremated her for free.

Do not try to beat it to death with the dull side of an ax. It is much more labor intensive than you might think.

It’s not about softness.

Why resort to a crueler way of putting and animal down, that has a higher chance of failing, when a more dignified and humane way is available?

Drowning/shooting/clubbing are third world ways to deal with a family pet. Feel free to go back to your third world country.

I can personally attest that soft cast 40sw to the head is plenty for a quick death for a cat. 10mm JHP to the head works as well. Not sure about anything smaller than that.

BTW, vets don't always get it right.  I wouldn't jump the gun on putting it down until it becomes noticeably sick.  The vet I use told me one cat "probably has a brain tumor, there is nothing we can do for it, and you should think about putting it down" every time I took the cat in.  It would recover and be fine.  It lived another 8 years after that and finally succumbed to kidney fail around 20 years old.

Agreed.

I put down my son's cat with a .22 but I made him close his eyes while he held his cat down.

Unfortunately four year Olds don't hold struggling cats down very well, and it took a few more rounds than I anticipated.

AND he didn't keep his eyes closed either.

On an unrelated note, he got all hysterical for some reason right after that.

(No I didn't do that!)

When I was a kid, my Mom did in my sick hamster using the gas range, tubing, and a container.  It was painless and I hold nothing against my Mom.   Your mileage may vary.

I grew up on a farm and still own a farm, we give our animals a respectful death here, and drowning them in a sack isn't that.

Shooting them is cheap and quick, drowning an animal is heartless and needlessly cruel, especially when a .22 is what  3 cents a shot?

Would you like to drown in a sack? If the answer is no then why would you do it to any other living creature?

Yes I shoot and eat animals, but I do my very best to kill them quickly and with the least amount of pain possible, I feel that's my responsibility as a good and moral human.

You do you, but not all of us that own actual farms think drowning anything is the right way to do things.

I say all the above as someone who really doesn't like cats much.

Flame suit on I guess.

It can be argued that a last walk in the woods, a treat, and a 12ga is a happier ending than a trip to the vet.  It's certainly at least as humane.  I won't put down my pets that way, but I've been asked to do it by friends who think it will be better for their pets.  If they insist I'll do it for their mental health because they feel strongly it's the right thing to do and I know it'll get done right.

Don't shoot it if your squeemish. When you shoot a cat they flop around like an uncoiling spring.  I use a 12ga, I saw my brother try to put a cat down with a 22 to the head.  It moved a bit and the jaw came off and started running.  For most people I'd recommend having the vet do it.

I can corroborate these facts.

It was in the name of expediency. I don't recommend the experience if there is a choice. It's pretty brutal.

You could use helium/nitrogen in a clear bag.   It's peaceful.  Don't use too big of a bag or too much helium.  Nothing makes the news faster than a cat in a clear bag floating above the houses in the neighborhood.

I have put down a couple cats using a .22.  One accurate shot and dead right away.  I put down a dog with a .38 ACP in the same manner.  I do not like killing, but I am not going to pay someone to do it for me.

I'll diy most anything, including garage door springs.  But we take the critters to the vet.

Btw, our last final vet trip for euthanasia, cremation, wooden box with cremains, and a sand impression of his paw print was $300 for a 70-80 lb weimaraner.
