Yeah. Friend of my parents was given the wrong blood type back in the 70s. It almost killed him and left him requiring leg braces to walk for the rest of his life.

That's not how it works.
At any rate, you either get Oneg or Opos (if you are not a women of childbearing age) in an emergency.
Your type and screen is repeated every 3 days. This is because there are more antigens than A, B , AB, and rH and you could produce antibodies to them, they screen for antigen negative units.
There have been cases where someone really fucked up and either got someone else's blood or other fuck ups happened with an ABO incompatibility. In that case you have a transfusion reaction and your body breaks the cells down that was transfused into you. This doesn't cause legs in braces. Renal failure is a risk. You would probably need dialysis. You would have anaphylactic shock and a host of other serious symptoms.
I know of a case where an Aneg person got Opos blood. It was immediately noticed, the person got rhogam and knowing the institution probably never were told that happened. I'm sure they were billed for the rhogam though.
The reason an rH negative person can get rH pos blood in an emergency is because it's not a natural immunity like ABO, so it takes time for the body to react. They can't get rH pos blood indefinitely though and it's better than dying.
The guy probably had leg braces because of why he was in the hospital to begin with.
Another common bullshit lie people tell is how they turned blue from carbon monoxide poisoning. Carbon monoxide bonds with the hemoglobin protein as if it were oxygen, making turning blue all but impossible. One of the clues is the dead people DON'T turn blue.
