Here's the chart. The long video was taken from the Northwest of the bridge. I know this because the right pier for the main span, the powerline tower (with lighted top) is in front, and Fort Carrol is in the background. https://www.ar15.com/media/mediaFiles/74968/Screenshot_2024-03-26_at_3_22_06 Here's a screenshot from Google Earth to show roughly how they all line up: https://www.ar15.com/media/mediaFiles/74968/Screenshot_2024-03-26_at_3_24_51 Now go back and look at the long video. The ship makes a hard right, bringing it directly toward the camera. If we estimate that the ship was about 30 from heading at the camera to begin with, that puts it coming from Sollers Point Shoal - nowhere near any channel. What's more... Sollers Point Shoal has a sounding of like 7' in most places - and that ship has a draught of 12.2m. Again, I'm nowhere near an expert in this area, but I can read a damned map. I don't see how it's possible that ship was where it was by accident. ETA: Image links aren't working not sure why. I wonder if the pilot was on board and called in steering and power problems. |

But you know that the Baltimore bridge isn’t a cable suspension bridge, don’t you? |

Power failed twice during the approach. If one happened during a course adjustment, would the rudder be stuck in that position?

Stock market is going to take a hit today and Port of Baltimore is now essentially closed for God knows how long.

Horrible. This will have severe economic impact on the US. I have seen many white papers on how actions like these are how to defeat the US.

Rest In Peace to those in the collapse.
Life in Baltimore is about to get a bit worse than it already is at the moment. |

I just woke up and turned on the news and went
But as some of you siad Port of Baltimore is closed The market is gonna take a hit All the car manufacturers have carports right there that ship cars to dealers And traffic up/down the 95 Baltimore parkway is gonna be horrible I'm wondering if people had enough time to get off the bridge |

Prayers for those involved.
This does not help my phobia of bridges. |

Quoted: Pilot associations are kinda like guilds and semi-inherited, it's much more difficult to get into one unless your parents are one or you're well-connected and a good networker. A pilot fuckup is much less likely to be DEI and more someone's idiot kid getting a slot they don't deserve. Regardless, I suspect this is some sort of mechanical failure. View Quote The lights going out during the approach to the bridge do seem to imply a system failure of some kind. |

That's insane. I thought just a small part collapsed, this is catastrophic.
It's going to be years before they remove the old bridge and build a new one. All of the shipping lanes will be cut off in that harbor. What about Hazmat? You can't transport it through enclosed tunnels, the bridge was the only route. |

From watching the video, it appears to me, the ship lost power just prior to hitting the bridge. Looks like they got power back, but who knows if they had propulsion and steering.

Mayor Pete is on it

No tinfoil here, genuine curiosity.
Are there gas lines running along the bridge? What was the cause of the explosions at the abutments and the one right of ship while the bridge was collapsing? |

That's insane.
I guess the only thing that's "good" is that it wasn't during a high traffic time of the day. |

So what do we think- competency crisis, failing infrastructure issues, or both? I am voting both… The infrastructure shouldn't have been hit. Too early to call it deliberate but it's weird. I wanna see video before it hit Oh I agree. But there is some consideration to the possibility when things are designed. So if it was not maintained correctly, it could be part of the problem or have exacerbated the disaster. |

From stock photos of the bridge, it doesn't look like it has any dolphins to prevent a direct strike.
