All of those reactors are enormous and have very low power densities for naval propulsion purposes. Modular?? No thanks. Don't fuck with what Rickover made right the first time.

Sure.
Lets bring back prop driven fighters and bombers as well. Ahhhhh .... well .... nevermind. |

They'd be highly-specialized ships, and we don't do a lot of opposed beach landings these days.

They're a little obsolete with the advent of long range anti-ship missiles, armed drones, carriers, and attack subs.

Quoted: Aren't they all stricken from the Navy roster?:( View Quote Then when the whole DDGX21fukwutever came "online" they eventually rage quite the Battleships going all "look bro's we totally have this boat on paper that's going to kick ass and fill the NGFS role!" That was a decade and some change ago IIRC... Think about it this way... with all the money spent on the GWOT, new fighters, submarines*, and the DDX... we could have brought back a battleship or two JUST to shell parts of Iraq in 2003 and no one would have even noticed it in the budget. *look how much we've spent to build subs that get scrapped before even being finished. |

If those things make a battleship obsolete, they make ALL surface warfare ships obsolete. BB's are better protected than MANY current ships that operate near shore such as ARG/ MEU's. |

Let us skip all of the horse shit and start using tactical nukes. The second battle of Fallujah could have been over in 15 seconds. It would have send a message that would have been understood by all the cave men around the world.

Nice models. I see the 5"/38 DP guns have been replaced with 5"/54? They save a lot of personnel space. She certainly looks cleaner.

Take an aircraft carrier and weld a battleship to each side of it. |

View Quote Too slow. 28 knots is a joke. I've been on cargo ships that could run faster than that. |

Lasers as a weapons concept aren't all that awesome imho, wouldn't be very effective beyond line of sight/horizon, and they are horribly innefficient input-> output energy wise. Rail guns would be more useful imho, you could shoot them MUCH further. We will always have a use for projectile weapons due to the need to engage things in defilade, etc |
