I recall reading much the same thing.  It seems that this theory has come under skepticism, at least as the sole cause of the deforestation (human action is likely a large part, but the idea that the statues were the primary reason the trees were cut down is considered unlikely now).  Cutting the trees to allow for farmland is considered likely, and there is also a theory that the Polynesian Rat arrived (probably with the first settlers) and caused at least some of it - the rats eat the palm nuts, and there are no natural predators to the rat on Easter Island.  This theory is also considered a possible explanation as to widespread deforestation that occurred on Oahu a few hundred years before widespread human settlement.

If Easter Island interests you, the movie Rapa Nui is a good flick from the 90s about the Short Ears and the Long Ears.  Fictional drama.

The heads had been covered by successive mass transport deposits on the island that buried the statues lower half. These events enveloped the statues and gradually buried them to their heads as the islands naturally weathered and eroded through the centuries.

Easter Island is situated within the Nazca Plate and is a volcanic hot spot, similar to the Hawaiian Island chain. This hot spot produced the Sala y Gomez ridge which spans East of Easter Island as the Pacific Ocean opened through the East Pacific Rise.

I figured someone beat me to this.

Not a single trench box in sight.

OSHA would red tag that and fine the fuck out of the general.

What we think we know about our past is comical... Think about this.... How much more of this shit is all over the world just below our very feet...  Side note.... At what point in chopping down the last tree on the island do you think they realized they done did fucked up?....

Or move it? Or stand it up? Just looking at the people in that picture, it could be 36-50 feet tall and weigh tons.

Have you ever "walked" something heavy, like a 55 gallon drum, by pivoting it from side to side?

That’s how they moved these statues. It's also why there are some laying on their side on the path from the quarry, abandoned when they fell over, iirc.

So now that they dug it out... now what? Backfill? Daylight it? Leave death pit so someone can be pinned to its pecker in a collapse for another 1000 years?

It seems likely that there may have been slaves involved in this project.  All these statues might need to come down.

The civilization on Easter Island is fascinating. Particularly interesting is the story of their collapse.

The islanders spent decades, possibly centuries making these statues. When their civilization collapsed these statues were torn down and ritualistically desecrated. People are familiar with the statues but not too many people know that the statues had carved coral eyes. When those eyes are reinstalled in a statue it completely changes the appearance of the statues.

Fall of Civilizations did a really good podcast on their culture and its collapse, if you have a couple of hours to kill:

6. Easter Island - Where Giants Walked

BTW it's a really good channel, they've done a lot excellent podcasts on other civilizations, too. Seeing the parallels from civilization to fallen civilization is creepy. Comparing their deaths to our own civilization also swirling the drain is also creepy.

The pictures do not show the wall details but to me it does not look like aggradation of material by debris flows or other mass movement.  Looks more like basalt weathered in a tropical environment.  Are there other details about the excavation?
