You can tell they know that the impeachment thing is backfiring. CNN just published this piece suggesting democrats should settle for censure instead of impeachment.

Basically they are admitting that public opinion is against them, that the senate will never vote for impeachment and are posturing to make it seem like failure is victory.

(CNN)The evidence is mounting daily that President Donald Trump may have committed an impeachable offense in withholding aid to Ukraine as he sought an investigation that would aid his reelection campaign. But with our polarized political system and split party control of Congress -- many think impeachment is inevitable in the House, but conviction unattainable in the Senate -- we need an alternative to impeachment. And luckily we have one.

After amassing the testimony and preparing for the articles of impeachment, the House could change course and introduce a resolution for censure of the President. In it, they would recite all the behavior that would go into articles of impeachment. But instead of Trump's removal from office as a remedy, it would essentially place the impeachment process in abeyance until the House can determine whether it will be able to hear from additional key witnesses.

This is a viable option for many reasons.

That last sentence is a doozy; they are waiting to see if they can bend the law to force additional "witnesses" to testify. They they'll finally be able to get Trump! Woo Hoo!!!

This next paragraph is fun - in which they admit that a partisan line vote for censure in the house is the most they will ever get because they aren't taking the senate any time soon.

A censure would issue a formal warning: This is unacceptable behavior for a president, but we will not remove you from office this time. However, pending further testimony or should there be any instance of further wrongdoing, the appropriate remedy is removal from office. Ideally, the Senate would also adopt a resolution of censure, though support for Trump and the politics of the upcoming election would suggest that that is highly unlikely.

NPR has been wall to wall impeachment. Wednesday I heard THE most strident fellow pretty much saying impeachment is a done deal and Trump is done.

Fast forward to this morning, not a peep. Not a single mention of impeachment whatsoever. The memo went out.

Censure is their exit clause, one that increasingly looks tempting. The impeachment circus has only made Trunp stronger and they need to stop the bleeding.

They could censure and set aside the impeachment stuff for now. If the did that they could focus on senate races but 2/3rds is quite the lofty goal, I’m not even sure it’s possible given the gop senators running next year. They could make all the senate races into an impeach trump campaign.

They never even took the step of official impeachment proceedings. It was an "inquiry" designed to put the word impeachment into as many gullible brains as possible. When pelosi first announced it some of the less smart democrats publicly voiced concern over what had changed since no official action had been taken. They were quickly shut down because they were right - it was another giant nothing burger. It was always a media circus and nothing more.
