| I have tons of pics to post was hoping to sort everything out today and get them in here. Unfortunately I was in a very very bad wreck after I got back to Virginia last night. My XJ is totalled thanks to a 50mph head on with a tree. I was fortunate enough to walk away from it somehow. I'm okay and will get pics up asap I promise. I would like to thank all the sponsors as well as Ace and all the Cola bros for a great weekend. I'll put together an appropriate thank you once the pain eases and my head is clear of the meds. When I tried the ropes this past weekend (I ran the weekend before that), I was surprised how easy they were. But during my run, my arms were burning already, and I don't think I could have done it otherwise.

So after driving all day Sunday, I've finally got some time to sit down and type this out. I've got one thing to say in general, and then I'll discuss the fire specifically.
Yes, for those who weren't there, we had a fire. Kaik tried to blow me up using weaponized pork products. Don't worry, nobody got killed. Well, I guess the pig did. But he was delicious. So, yeah. Pretty much everything this week tried to kill me. The River of Death, Waffle House food, snakes, bugs, a microtard with bloodlust, ATVs, TVs (seriously, it's 2016, why do we have 85 pound TVs on top of rickety decomposing tables?), the FEMA/Haliburton weather machine, fuckin tornadoes and shit, oh yeah, the oven exploded... In fact, it would be easier to list the things that didn't try to kill me. Interestingly, that list is topped by all the people with guns. I saw people do all sorts of stupid things with food, soda, GoPro cameras, off-road vehicles, zip lines, their own bodies, other people's bodies, parts of animal bodies, steel boxes, ropes, tractor tires... you name it. But every single time anyone touched a gun, it was 100% safe and professional. In fact, if I hadn't pointed that out just now, I think a lot of people wouldn't have even noticed it. We've got, what, eleven events behind us at this point? And another five coming up over the next year? Understandably, we've all gotten used to doing things a certain way. We show up at Cola Warrior event, and we just assume that certain things are going to happen and that there are certain standards of behavior. It's not even something that we discuss. It gets mentioned once and we never need to revisit the issue. Safety, honor, sportsmanship... these things are automatic. I'll give you another perfect example. With all my night vision stuff, I've got maybe $10k worth of gear. I just left it sitting out in the open. My wallet was on the console of the unlocked truck with $100 in it the whole time. Not once did I even consider the need to lock anything up. Make sure I didn't lose anything, absolutely. The swamp eats, oh, it eats. But to worry about any of my ColaBros doing anything? Nonsense. I can't remember exactly who pointed this out to me, but we were standing on the porch and someone observed that during a Cola Warrior event is the absolute last place that you'd ever need to carry a gun to protect yourself. It's safer than your own home (well... these things being relative, since I don't tend to blow up my oven... but I'll get to that). All this speaks to a level of civility that seems to be tragically rare in general society. Cola Warriors, you are all, each and every one of you, excellent human beings. Don't believe me? Consider this simple test: If everyone behaved like we do, what problems would the world still have? Broken ATVs would pretty much be the worst of it, wouldn't it? So, with that in mind, let's talk about the bacon explosion... Late Friday morning, I was busy handing everyone their asses in Halo. I was seated right next to the stove. Inside the stove were two pork butts in aluminum half-sheet trays that had been cooking since about midnight Thursday. The oven had timed off, and Kaik came in to turn it on and get lunch ready. I don't recall him opening or checking the oven before turning it on, and I was too focused on the game to bother helping him. At some point, one of the butts had overflowed, or the thin aluminum pan had leaked, and pork drippings had made their way to the bottom of the oven. The oven was only set at 225, but of course the electrical heating element gets much hotter than that. Incipient time was less than ten minutes. We didn't even finish the Halo game, and I think default time limit is 20 minutes? I smelled smoke and said, "Guys, something is burning." Someone on the couch replied that it was just the pork butts for lunch. I thought no way, and looked at the oven. I saw the upper vent (along the range top) leaking smoke. The rest of the half sheet pans, inside a plastic bag, were on top of the stove along with another bag of condiments. My initial thought was that Kaik accidentally turned the range on instead of the oven, and that the plastic bags were smoldering, Holding the controller with my right hand, I reached over with my left to clear the bags. As soon as I did, the pressure inside the oven finally went high enough to crack the door and let the fuel-rich space take a big breath of air. I did not have time to consciously react. The backdraft blew the door open, burned my arm, knocked the condiments down (wedging the door open), and blasted the oven itself about 6" away from the wall. It was really impressive. I got about a 4"x4" area on the inside of my left arm with a 1st degree burn and singed all my eyebrows. With the amount of energy involved, it could have been a lot worse. I threw everything onto the floor, closed the oven door, and turned the oven off. I think I may have broken the soy sauce or something. Sorry about that, by the way. I realized everyone else could handle whatever was left to do, so I immediately went to the bathroom and ran cold water on my arm. Smoke filling took less than a minute before the air was very uncomfortable to breathe. It never reached untenable levels. The alarm sounded at about the same time as the smoke became cough-inducing, perhaps 30 seconds after the backdraft event. I turned the sink off, opened the bathroom window, and egressed to the porch. I heard people yelling for extinguishers, so I returned to see if the fire still needed to be fought. My plan was to start carrying and pre-staging water if we needed to dump extinguishers, with the expectation that might not be enough. Fortunately, the oven was still intact and closing the door and turning it off was enough to put the fire out. Bonus: The pork was still perfectly good. I'm really glad we didn't pop off an extinguisher. What a mess those things are. I left the house again to go find medical treatment. I waived off all the expensive stuff. The injury just wasn't that bad that it was worth a $10 burn compress. But thank you to Tommy and everyone else that had it and offered. I ended up just taking some aloe from Iwouldntknow (which, thanks a bunch, it was perfect). I was really mad. I'm sure I told Kaik to go fuck himself with various anus-obliterating objects. But I'll say it here for the record... I'm fine, and I've got no beef with Kaik. Oh, it's most definitely his fault, but then I was also sitting right there and I knew to check the oven. I was too busy playing a video game to take the three seconds to open the door and peek inside. I forgive Kaik, and I apologize to everyone else, especially RustedAce and his family, for my having known better and failing to prevent it. I commend everyone for having the tools (from extinguishers to first aid supplies), knowledge, and gumption to respond properly and timely. A lot of people will be in a fire event and just stand there like cattle (or start recording it for wirrlstar). Out of all the stuff that happened this week, I think the fire and its aftermath is the only thing that there's no video or pictures of. Everyone was busy helping in some way, and we just didn't have cameras up (although it is a shame, because I'm sure it would have been impressive to have that on video). That also says something about y'all. So, with that out of the way, I believe I can lay the whole weaponized pork butt oven explosion incident to rest. A few more thank yous are in order. First up to Damascus Knifemaker (ADW Customs) - I won best pistol (I missed one shot, which was totally my fault, and I can give you the play by play if you need it) and this knife is really, really nice. I can't say enough about it. I know it's not an incredibly complex piece, but you still took a lot of time to make this, and the care is evident in its perfection. The grind is perfectly centered and symmetrical. The edge is flawless. It's simple, but it's exactly what it should be. It's a functional piece of art that I'm going to be proud to use and care for. I do have to ask - It looks like bead-blasted stainless, which as far as care goes should just be to keep it sharp and lightly oiled. Is that correct or do I need to be a little more vigilant in avoiding oxidation? To the other sponsors - Thank you so much for continuing to help us out. You don't have to do this, and the fact that you do says a lot about your love and support for the community. You all offer excellent products, and we rely on that performance.
