For about $700 and $7/month, motorists who choose to buy the plate can register their vehicles electronically and eliminate the need to physically stick tags on their plates each year.  They also may be able to display personal messages  if the DMV decides to allow that.
Government bureaucrats want assurances that the plate technology will not be used to monitor city employees.

Wait until they are mandatory and you have to pay $700 every time you buy a new car and add another $85/yr on your registration.

Strike that, they will be $1,500 and $300-$400 a year on your registration because the "rich" will have to subsidize them so that the hoodrats get them for free.

We've had a bunch of undercover reporting stories here where they follow city employees and are catching them at strip clubs, bars, leaving work early and going home, to personal businesses, or second jobs, all while on the clock or drawing overtime.

Then I will take the mandated plate and power it off a 12v constant supply and it will just stay in my garage for eternity.

Easy enough to find a seperate way of displaying the plate information and passing it off as the "new new" without it being connected to govt bullshit.

5 vehicles and only one of my vehicles has the license plate front/back.   Nunber of times pulled over in 8 years for the front plate violation?  Zero.

I wonder if insurance companies would pay for it in the event of a rear-end collision. You would think it would count as personal property, but then again maybe it could fall under customized equipment. Hm.

Oops, forgot.

$3,000 and $600-$800 a year because CA mandates two license plates.
Forgot because I don't run a front plate on any of my stuff.

ETA: Non functional/malfunctioning license plate will be yet another pretext stop. Even funnier, they will probably still require your license plate lights to be functional.

Monitor? That could never happen. Besides how many firms use GPS tracking on their trucks, why should city employees, who are paid by the tax payer be exempt?

- remove digital license plate
- place in microwave oven for ~30 seconds
- reinstall digital license plate
- drive at ludicrous speed

I always used the local AAA office for that stuff.
Super easy, and not the DMV.
