For about $700 and $7/month, motorists who choose to buy the plate can register their vehicles electronically and eliminate the need to physically stick tags on their plates each year. They also may be able to display personal messages if the DMV decides to allow that.
Government bureaucrats want assurances that the plate technology will not be used to monitor city employees. http://www.sacbee.com/news/local/transportation/back-seat-driver/article211828814.html |

Are there a bunch of Silicon Valley engineers in prison hammering those out?
Dont want city employees monitored? That doesn't sound sketchy ar all.
Wait until they are mandatory and you have to pay $700 every time you buy a new car and add another $85/yr on your registration.
Strike that, they will be $1,500 and $300-$400 a year on your registration because the "rich" will have to subsidize them so that the hoodrats get them for free. |

The better to Track you with my dear. It's Clearly a 4th Amendment Violation. The Politicians in California should be locked up for Crimes against Humanity.
Oh neat. Now you can change the displayed license, the make, model, and owner of your car with a few taps on the computer.
Yet ANOTHER reason I’m glad I departed that oozing sphincter of a state 22 years ago...
It's a tracking device, we'll see that on all cars eventually, at least in places like CA and NY, and anyone here objecting will be called a sovereign citizen

Wait until someone hacks one of these and replaces their license plate number with the Govonor's every time they hit the easy pass lane.

Nunber of times pulled over in 8 years for the front plate violation? Zero. |

Just think of all the revenue that could be made with speeding tickets. With GPS and a cellular connection, your plate could phone home every time you exceeded the speed limit.

Probably 20 cents of everyone will go to illegals healthcare.

I wonder if insurance companies would pay for it in the event of a rear-end collision. You would think it would count as personal property, but then again maybe it could fall under customized equipment. Hm.

Forgot because I don't run a front plate on any of my stuff. ETA: Non functional/malfunctioning license plate will be yet another pretext stop. Even funnier, they will probably still require your license plate lights to be functional. |

No potential for abuse at all... surely it won't start blinking "SUSPENDED" if you get too many parking tickets, miss a child support payment, or get GPS tagged at a gun shop over the border.

So it's a way more expensive system that will also track you, no doubt, for a very very slight convenience? Sounds about right.

In younger days, I would have been tempted to:
- remove digital license plate - place in microwave oven for ~30 seconds - reinstall digital license plate - drive at ludicrous speed |
