Unlike the morans here that insist Chicago pizza has to be deep dish, I'm asking those who rave about NYC to tell me how to define it, and where to go (with my admittedly unfair Manhattan qualifier, however).

Often par cooked and sitting out on display, along with several other pies (10 or more).  You indicate the slice(s) you want, they get reheated in the oven for a few minutes, you take them and enjoy.  Street food, basically.  The crust is foldable---so not a cracker, like a blackened bottom Neapolitan style pie---somewhat doughy and springy in texture, but not as doughy as a California chain pizzeria (i worked in a Round Table in HS) or as sloppy as a deep-dish or pan pizza.  Sauce is usually tomato based, mildly spiced with oregano and marjoram, cheese is predominantly mozzarella with a few other cheeses for texture and flavor.
The slice places I mentioned in an earlier post are good examples of the style.

Then there's the coal oven, Neapolitan or adjacent style.  Crust is blackened on the bottom.  It.may have some spring, but usually cannot be bent into a U shape.  Cheeses are usually artisanal, as are the toppings. (I had guanciale at Razza.  Good, wouldn't seek that topping out again.)  Cooked once, and freshness is key.  Biga Pizza, the Montana (Missoula) restaurant I mentioned, makes this kind, and it's frankly better than Razza's.  I imagine Lombardi's will be in this style, but I've not tried it.

In both, the taste of the crust is very important and distinctive from either Chicago's pizzerias (I've tried Lou's, Uno, Due) or the California ones I mentioned.  Or Nick's Place in Houston, which otherwise is on point for excellent pizza. (And E Coast attitude.  Or efficiency, depending on your POV) Kind of a hint of the aroma from homemade pain au levain.  But not sour.

Manhattan has the greatest density of great restaurants in the country.  Broadway, museums, art galleries…

I’m a NYC hater, but try to be at least realistic about it…

Also had a great time in Manhattan this Spring (good thing about single digit temps is that it minimizes the freak factor in Times Square).  Saw a couple of shows, went to some outstanding restaurants, visited some museums, saw my son play at Carnegie Hall.

They have airplanes, motorcycles and hiking in NYC.  Book a plane to fly out of LGA, Rent a SuperMoto to duel cabbies through the canyons of buildings.  Hike Harlem for the wildwoods.

Your answer has already been given.

I ate a lot of pizza in Chicago too.  They have some good non-Chicago-style pizza, but overall, I thought their regular pizza was nothing special.  I contend that the median pizza in Chicago is worse than the median pizza in Manhattan.  You can certainly find good pizza and shit pizza in both places.

I admit I haven’t been to Chicago in a while, and that I didn’t have as much information on where to go in Chicago as I did  for NYC, but I did go to places that were “famous” for their pizza and wasn’t as impressed as I was by the places I ate in NYC.

NY/NJ just owns pizza. You can bitch and moan all you want, but there just isn’t much of an argument to be made that any other place can really compete.  I say this as no big fan of either place.  I don’t really know exactly why - some say it’s the water, maybe it’s the technique - fuck, I don’t know… but they make the best pizza I ever ate there.

NYC is the best food city in the US in general.  It’s a ways to second place (Chicago, LA, New Orleans, Boston are all strong contenders).  I think it rather sucks that all of the best food cities are painfully liberal, but that’s just the way it is.

Oddly enough, I had excellent pizza in Aruba… go figure.

I ended up enjoying myself. The entire trip was worth it seeing how excited she was and how much fun she had.

I was this guy before I visited.  Same reaction after visiting.  Had a blast, even with work.  I loved that everyone (at least where I was) seems to have their shit together:  know where you're going, what you're buying, what you're being asked.  "Move with purpose," as the army drill sergeant said in that youtube video to new recruits getting off the bus.

(And I've never been hustled there in the stereotypical way you get in, e.g., New Orleans.  Of course, I didn't take up the very nice man wanting me to ride in his pedicab 6 blocks. Or the equally nice guy sitting at a chess table in Washington Square...)

If you're lost, get out of the middle of the sidewalk, and fix yourself.  Know what you're doing, and prepare beforehand.  If you're running to make a flight, move left; if you're just moving along, stay right, and so on.  And don't let youself get screwed.  I stuck my foot in the closing Alden store door, because their sign said they were open for another half hour, I knew what I wanted, and insisted on trying them.  Found the pair I liked (having the SKUs at hand from their catalog helped), bought them, and the whole thing took maybe 10 minutes.  Happy me, happy store guy.

If you can do that (and float on a river of money) you'll like NY.  At least to visit.

Only if you want to spend a year being bent over by Antwon and Donrell.  They can do whatever they want but the system will hit you like a ton of bricks.  And a lot of tourist attractions have metal detectors.  Plus the Police respond to all airport checkins where a firearm is declared.  You can fly into NY with a gun but they arrest you when you try to leave.

My former company closed its local office in NYC and the property owner was willing to give them 2 months off their rent if they would sign a 2yr lease. 5mo off if they signed a 3yr lease.

With 100% remote workers, my former CEO said "NOPE".

None of my co-workers there were disappointed. 2 had been mugged, all of them had had personal belongings stolen, one was in the hospital after an unprovoked attack.

NYPD is about as inept and corrupt as they come - found out the rat who assaulted my co-worker is a nephew of one of the fuckwads in charge and he pled down to a midomeanor charge and no jail time or restitution or probation.

No terrorist wants to bomb NYC - its already a shithole/waste of ammo.

I think it's safe to say that anyone who thinks seeing an image on 4k TV, or any other format, is anything akin to actually being somewhere, is not someone who will ever understand. I wouldn't expect such a person to appreciate an exhibit in a museum either. Or a live performance. Why, when you can watch a recording, or watch a movie, right?

It is.

I love traveling across our country and seeing the sights, eating the food, and meeting folks. The United States is by far the most cosmopolitan nation ever with such a vast variety of cultures and histories. My latest trip to Wyoming was wonderful. Driving through quaint little towns tucked away in the mountains, visiting the Wind River Indian Reservation, seeing the tourist sights, visiting the Cody museums, and eating some fantastic Wyoming beef was awesome.

The US, for all of its faults, is an amazing place and honestly there is so much to see within our borders. That you can spend a lifetime doing that and never leave US Jurisdiction.

Was actually mostly joking. Obviously some things are better IRL. Grand Canyon?  Vietnam War Memorial Wall? Profound. Clearly a different experience IRL. I've been to museums, live theatre, art exhibits. It was ok. Worth the time, trouble, expense and hassle of traveling? Not usually.

Since authentic NYC pizza is now outlawed no reason to go. And probably means another 100,000 will flee to Florida or Arizona.

Here are some of my recent interactions with New Yorkers in the desert:

1) Saw a coyote (animal not human smuggler) and asked if they should call 911.

2) Hired Mexicans to cut down and remove every plant on their property because of "thorns."

3) Asked if there was a spray, like an insecticide, for lizards.

4) Called a harmless desert iguana (chuckwalla) a "Hula Monster" on the community message board and said its bite was venomous and you will "wish you were dead."

5) Asked me if Phoenix had any plans for a Subway.

NYC? lol Get a rope!

I love how the pizza debate made it into this conversation.

Chicago "deep dish" pizza is usually delicious, but it's not pizza. It's an Eye-talian casserole.

Pizza is an appetizer. "Deep dish" Eye-talian casserole is a meal.

This.
I went to college and graduate school (mid 1970s-1980s) about 16 miles north of midtown Manhattan. Although I never wanted to live there, it had a great deal of things to see, experience.
Not sure how the Little Italy in the Bronx is these days but I preferred its restaurants (Arthur Avenue) to Manhattan's Little Italy any day of the week. Many great Italian places in the five boroughs and Westchester County. Many excellent restaurants of all types, as well.

Fun to see new things.

If you live in a flyover town with population <10k and near at bigger cities, getting out to see places like NYC, Seattle, London, etc. can be neat.

I’ve been to NYC about 2-3 times.  Usually by about day 3-4 it’s time to GTFO.

Back in the 90's I ran flatbed in and out of NYC 3/4 days a week.

Typically hauling steel into a few places.
A couple I remember were Super Stud, maybe in Queens?

The other was Ocean Casket Company, hauled in steel sheets. Seems they used it for heavy duty caskets for big and tall people?

Going out was bailed garbage to Poland Ohio or Weirton WVA most times, sometimes upstate PA. Almost always picked up at Star on Varrick Ave in Brooklyn.

So, there were times I may have been too late to be unloaded or the place I was getting loaded was either really backed up or maybe broke down and this meant I frequently had anywhere from a couple hours to up to 12 hours to either sit in the truck and try to keep the cops off my ass due to NYC even then having anti idling laws or I and usually another company driver went exploring.

I got to see lots of interesting historical stuff there, visited a few bars, places to eat, made some friends with some locals, one being a Polish immigrant that made furniture in a rented storage unit. I learned which of the roach coaches had beer stashed inside for the occasional 16 hour or so "layover" when I had to wait for a load.
Took a cab down to Chinatown a few times, I don't eat Chinese food but I did have some of the "Americanized" stuff at a few places, bought some cheap knockoffs, hell I was the only driver in our company that had a "Rolex" I bet.

The government of NY and NYC suck, some of the people are rotten, some would kill you for looking at them wrong, but it's the most populous city in the US, what do you expect? But then there are the rest, people that are willing to bullshit in a bar, the street performers, whatever.

Would I want to live there? No damn way, never, but to go there to check out the sights on someone elses dime? Yeah, I'd do that again.

What was/is your go to pizza place in Brooklyn?

Rocco's on 79th & 5th. was my local. Pizza Wagon was another favorite.

When I didn't mind a bit of a drive, L&B Spumoni Gardens.

I've never been to L&B, looks great though.
I was a Park Slope guy, Vesuvios on 3rd Ave when I was in Bay Ridge.

Another good choice!

My mother grew up on 21st. just below Greenwood Cemetery.

I love how the pizza debate made it into this conversation.

Chicago "deep dish" pizza is usually delicious, but it's not pizza. It's an Eye-talian casserole.

It's the water.  That's why the bagels are better too.

It is the water... same reason why Cuban bread made in Miami tastes different than Cuban bread made in Tampa.

This seems to have negatively impacted you. Might I recommend travel to heal the wounds we've exposed in this thread?

You're the one bitching about people not wanting to go to NY.

I'm plenty good on travel, but if it's North of TN you're gonna have to pay me.

If you read anything I’ve posted in this thread as bitching that people don’t want to go to NYC, you need to travel north of Tennessee to get some reading comprehension lessons as it’s apparent the south has failed you in this task.

You've called people miserable and depressing. That's bitching.

I learned to call things what they are. I'm proud of that.
