With 18 months of dedicated training, I think I'd have a shot at passing.

At 24? Maybe. Now? Probably not.

Nope.

Even in my peak shape around 24, I could never run over 6 miles—my personal, life-time best. The time wasn’t impressive enough to remember, but more I couldn’t get my head to stop asking “why are we doing this?”

I hated running, I was a “lifter,” and even that wasn’t too impressive: bench of 315 when I weighed 185 and a squat of 300. In push up contests, I maxed at 91 push up and sit ups was like 85(not my favorite exercise). The push up contests in the 1980s were: I do one, you do one, I do 2, you do 2, I do 3, you do 3, etc, etc. until someone gives  up & quits. Reaching & completing 13 = 91 push ups.

So, physically, not likely, and mentally no.

It’s the difference between a “weekend warrior” and an Olympic athelete.

Those are the Jack Reach-arounders, with 3% body fat, bench of 350/squat 450, 5 minute milers, BJJ black belts, with supermodel wife, multimillions $$$, who are their own boss in their video games.

I think Steven Seagal invented this idea of: you are what you say you are even if it’s only a film or a video game

It is the mantra of basement-dwelling ARFcommers.

If given 18 months to prepare, could you pass BUD/S?
You have no family, career, or life obligations to interrupt or distract from this scenario.
Your current health, fitness, swimming abilities, and all other factors are the same in the hypothetical scenario as they are in real life at this moment. This is about you, your ability to prepare for, and then your ability to get through BUD/S with nothing else in life getting in the way or distracting you.

Edited to add - this is about whether or not you believe you could pass BUD/S given 18mos to both physically and mentally prepare. To make it more interesting and to include more of you; also assume you are in your twenties...let’s call it 24. I am interested to see if you believe you have the character and traits it takes to have prepared for it in 18 months and then handled the physical and mental aspects of BUD/S.

Let’s also guess what % of GD will click, “yes” thinking they legitimately could have passed and see how that compares with the actual pass rate.

I clicked no before reading. After reading, at 24 i was way better off than I am now except for my ankle that is held together only by 1/2 A ligament and 1/2 a tendon. I still think i would fail.

Have a congenital heart anomaly that precludes me from such.
Basically the vessels supplying the heart(particularly the right ventricle) with blood are fuxxored. If you cannot get the blood from the heart to the lungs get oxygenated for such, The GrandMaster of Things had other plans for you.

I voted yes. I based that on being able to do it in my peak shape. I couln't do it now due to bad knees.

I did an iron man triathlon with three months of training. With 18 months I could difinetly get there physically. Metal wouldn't be a problem, I don't have enough going on up there for it to break down.

Now? No. I'm too broken from deployments and old.

9 years ago when I was going through EOD school? I'd have a shot.

Nope.

When I was younger, I didn't have the right attitude.

Now, I'm older and I don't have the body.  48 with arthritis starting in my shoulder.  18 months of prep and I would be a 50 year old man.  Not a chance in hell.  I think I could manage to not quit, I just would reach a point where I could no longer keep up and they would throw me out.

I'll be 59 in a month, so no.

Younger PDM was a monster though I was bounced out of pre-scuba (SF combat diver) for blacking out 3 times in one day, when doing cross-overs. Told I was burning too much O2. So I'd have to say that younger PDM would have had a tough time in BUDS also.  Water and cold are great discriminators though I'd argue, and have with GOs, that SEAL training makes the operator.

SEAL training produces a physically and mentally tough man. Does that mean, in and of itself, that he possesses all the qualities that are required by an operator? My position is no and that's based on about 35 years of experience and observation.

I will also say this. The Navy has done a great job marketing SEALs so you average Joe views them as the pinnacle. My observation has been, in terms of physicality, it's not SEALs. It's the USAF PJ (or now STS, I suppose) pipe-line. Those young men are fucking monsters.

No. 33 years old.

I mentally can't stand cold weather so that alone would kill me. I would never be able to do it with that cold. I also couldn't train well due to my kids.

I guess if my job and family weren't in existence and it was possibly climate controlled lol I may have a small chance, but I'm well aware the cold is a big part of the mental break down.

There is no way to get through seal training without wanting it.  I don't want it.  At all.

I'm 24. I work out regularly and I am in the best shape of my life, but there is no way to say yes or no without doing it, and I'd never do it. So, no. Could I potentially? Yeah anyone could, but I think it mostly depends on how much you want it. I wouldn't want it.

If I was in my early 20s, yeah. I was in pretty decent shape already and have an abnormally high pain tolerance. Also had a "fuck it all, I'm doing it" attitude back then.

Now? Let's not kid ourselves, shall we.
