Along my walk to elementary and middle school I walked past a house where a guy built a sailboat himself in a tight metal carport. I estimate the boat was 40ish feet and stood quite tall inside the homemade metal building it was in. We would sometimes see this guy working and stop and chat with him. He always said when it was done he was moving aboard and sailing the world. The boat was far nicer than the house it sat behind. Then one day after I was out of high school there was a bunch of activity going on around his house, power company, huge rig and funny looking trailer jammed onto this little lot. They elevated the power lines and hauled that thing out into the daylight and off they went. It creeped down the road behind the kind of rig you see moving a house. View Quote |

If it only cost them $10k to get going, they could get service industry jobs and bank $10k each in two months. Buy a new sailboat, get some lessons, be back on the water in June.

It was a bad choice... But still better than selling timeshares in Breck.

I wonder if they had a survey done on the boat before they purchased?
Seems not, if the keel broke that easily. |

First rule of gambling... Don't do it unless you have a backup plan or a lot of money to blow.
It sounds like they had neither. And a 28 foot boat for blue water sailing? No sailing experience? I wonder what would have happened when they had their first hard blow with big waves... They're lucky they had their mishap somewhere they could be rescued. |

The best part is the guys "rat race" that he was sick of involved him selling fucking timeshares in Colorado. I'm sure he'll be back to selling Amway to geriatrics in Tampa or perhaps working as a used car salesman while the g/f waitresses at Wing House in no time.
When I was 25 I was working overseas supporting OEF/OIF and I netted more in one month then they had total in that boat lol. I don't think they realize how lucky they were sinking within cell phone distance of land to call SeaTow because I doubt that boat had a radio on it. |

And then wondering what went wrong when you end up a fireball of crumpled aluminum because you clipped the fence at the end of the runway. "Useful load? Density altitude? Climb performance? What's that? I thought you just pushed the throttle in and went!" |

There are several decent (and at least one free) Marine oriented navigation apps for iOS, and Android. They had a cell phone. They had service. They had GPS.
Why weren't they using such if they weren't sure? I mean... yea, they should've paid more attention to the navigation aids around them and learned to use them properly. But a $50 app (at the high end) might have saved them. |

I think I read that the broke ass boat was 49 years old . Damn . If you have ever lived along any coast you know that someone always has one for sale . And it seems that they had no idea about sailing much less old ass boats . gd |

They were trying to follow in the footsteps of many other YouTube stars. Several of those have ended bad recently. One couple seemed to be doing things right by hiring a captain while they gain experience. Then the captain ran their boat into a closing drawbridge, totaled the boat, and then said it wasn't his fault. They pulled all their videos, I'm assuming due to a lawsuit against the captain. Another was that couple that docked in St. Martin right before the hurricane hit. Their boat is still at the bottom of the bay as far as I know. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCxS3_tghsmY7NmygVq7uMiw/videos View Quote who are the drawbridge people |

They were doing everything right. They started from scratch, learning about boats, boat hunting, boat inspections, and fixing issues. They took time to prep the boat, learn about things, since they didn't have the experience they hired a captain to move the boat and to learn from. In the video where they hit the bridge Niki is on the side of the boat questioning the Captain on if she should be moving the boat towards the bridge. They were motoring, not under sail as they were in a channel. The captain just ignored her, said he had room, and the top of the mast hit full speed into the bridge. That destroyed the hull structure of the boat where the mast was anchored down. Then the captain claimed he was just following their orders, an obvious lie, said he was not responsible for the accident and then skipped town. I'm sure there are lawsuits flying every which direction which is why any content that could be used against them has been pulled. |

Well that was sad, hilarious, and dumb. I know exactly what the guy was thinking because I used to day dream of crazy ideas like that too. But somewhere along the way I grew up and realized life means you have to work. You have to make money. There is no easy out. Thinking they could just get on a boat with change in their pockets and start a new life adventure living on the seas was really short-sighted and foolish. View Quote |
