Found this documentary about a guy that might have been a survivor of Custer's Last Stand.
It was a interesting documentary and it got the wheels turning......Was it Custer's blinded pride that lost the day? From reports that came out in I believe the 60's he had a chance to escape but chose not to.

The only survivor was a horse.
Yes, it was Custer's ego that got him killed, and another Captain's choice not to back him up. |
|
|
I blame it on Benteen (cowardice and vengeance) and Reno (incompetence)
|
|
Nope. Giovanni Martini was with Custer and sent with a message for Benteen and Reno. He survived.
Funny fact. He had fought with Garibaldi in Italy before |

And a shit load of Indians. Any truth to the fact Indian scouts told Custer "You don't have enough bullets for al those Indians"? View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted:

One of the guys they interviewed compared Custer to Patton......

Interesting and still controversial battle. Custer did many things wrong; inadequate recon, split his force in the face of a superior enemy, poor instructions to subordinates, a 'liberal" interpretation of his orders, overconfidence (not exactly misplaced), outnumbered by as much as ten to one. Had Reno and Benteen come to his aid it would only have increased the casualties. The last stand battle was actually quite short, less than a half an hour.

There is no way this is a saigaman thread. He mentions a documentary, yet there is no YouTube link?
Where is saigaman, and what have you done with him? |

Quoting a nutritional website: "Some believe that Custer would not have been defeated at the Battle of Little Bighorn if the troops of Benteen and Reno had arrived in time. One report indicated that the horses and mules in the pack train with Benteen and Reno were lame and acting crazy, which delayed their arrival.......the odd behavior was more likely caused by swainsonine, which along with high selenium levels, is found in some types of locoweeds that grow in the region. So, Custer’s last stand might have been avoided entirely if Benteen and Reno had known their animals were grazing on locoweeds. " |

Reportedly, his Indian scout Mitch Bouyer told him he had never seen that many indians, and the other scouts concurred that there were too many

How would a Calvary deploy a Gatling gun? Early tech and was essentially useless other than in implaced forts. Few historians fault him for leaving them. |

Under estimated the number of warriors against him. And their willingness to attack with fury.
Over estimated his ability. gd |

View Quote That's wrong. had Reno held his position (with lots of cover) to the woods (keeping at least 1/3rd of the warriors busy), and Benteen walked to the sound of battle (as rules and orders commanded) this wouldn't have been such a defeat, 300 troops wouldn't have been killed. That's a fact |

Tall grass concealed the enemy numbers. His initial plan to capture the womenz and childrenz to use as shields was thwarted by an early charge by the Indians.
Lever rifles vs. single shot breech loaders. Close combat with large caliber weapons with low skill rifleman. Most probably missed on firing and obscured the battlefield more with great plumes of smoke. |

It's a myth that the Lakota and Cheyenne all had repeaters. They had a few for sure, but most had muzzle loaders, bows and melee weapons

actually there were at least two Indian scouts that survived the day.

It could have gone either way in reality...........Benteen could have made a difference, or he could have suffered the same fate as Keogh's unit did and got wiped out on his way to Custer's position. Damned shame anyone had to die there
