I haven't seen the question asked: what level of disaster would occur if the damn completely failed,I don't think it will happen just curious what is downstream.

" We activated the auxiliary spillway". Hell the rain and snow "activated" the emergency spillway. To be fair, I believe they did cut back on the flow to the main spillway to reduce the damage and erosion. That allowed basin level to rise quicker and reach the level of the espillway. So yes, they did take some actions that resulted in use of the espillway. That action may be helping cut back on damage to the main spillway. |

I still don't understand why the turbines couldn't just spin and let water through. Hell if thats true, I sure don't understand why they didn't put some non turbine outlets down there for emergency like this to release water. |

View Quote You can't run water through the turbines and generate power if you have no place to put it... The other functions of the dam... like lights... the controls for the spillway gates... need power which since the dam's powerhouse isn't functioning is being carried in by the powerlines which are still attached. |

Why not? View Quote it's the way it was designed to run Normally, the power plant is the main vehicle for pushing water out of the lake. But DWR has temporarily shut the plant because all the concrete and other debris streaming into the river from the broken spillway has raised water levels to the point that the turbines can’t run. DWR needs the transmission tower to remain operational to be able to reopen the power plant. Read more here: http://www.sacbee.com/news/local/article132154774.html#storylink=cpy |
