Did anyone ever find out why DHS bought those MRAPS last year? Did we find out whether they were the Golani or the Maxxpro? Did DHS provide a task and purpose for them? Seems like everyones shit was on fire for a while when the news came out and then it kind of drifted away.

7 page thread dupe IIRC assuming it didn't get locked. Lot of people wondering why cops need mine/IED proof vehicles.
|
|
it's a self-fulfilling prophecy. They buy vehicles capable of taking on an insurgency, and in doing so they conceive ideas of insurgency in people's minds.
or those are just evac vehicles for social services workers besieged at the welfare office when the checks stop flowing |
|
Oh whatever. By the the time they need them everyone will know how to light them up.

Don't worry, step in this unmarked train car. i have your answers inside.

They are uparrming and hoarding ammo too, those at the top know the game is going to be up soon. They are not worried about the looters/FSA, they will fold like a cheapsuit. It is the people buying guns and hoarding ammo at record rates they are worried about. |

All I know, is RG-31s suck to drive in, and I'd rather travel in a pick-up any day of the week.

They bought them so they have an airconditioned armored command post where they can watch the ROVER feed from their MQ-1Bs, of course.

They'll roll those RG31's if they drive over 35MPH. Thats bullshit. RGs do great on hardball roads. |

Mraps arent that great ive been in the maxxpro, RG31/33
I'd like them to consider one thing, if some people in afghanistan can mix ANAL or ANFO and blow these vehicles up, why cant people do it here? Those mraps are just as useless here as over there. |

concerning them rolling over 35mph.. I've seen them haul ass on paved road, I don't think they'll be worried about rolling.
I highly doubt they're stocking up for the FSA or the likes of us. Then again, I think some people in border towns and the like will wish so. All of the shit in Mexico can stay in there for so long, it's been spilling across for some time now, and as arrests go down because the border is so "secure" it'll become pretty apparent that they've been setting up shop here for some time. |

Those are high water rescue vehicles................ Fuck'em my superduty can take them...

An RG-31 is a very capable vehicle, but Ive been more scared operating RGs on narrow mountain Jeep trails in RC East than I have with the enemy shooting at me. Precisely. We had some roll, and it's not fun dealing with that. The absolute scariest moment I've had while deployed didn't have anything to do with getting shot at or people trying to blow us up, or even when the helicopter crashed. It was coming close to rolling down a cliff into a canal when the road gave way and we got caught balanced on the rear transfer case and the front tire. I never want to do that again. We literally had just two tires touching anything, plus the transfer case. We didn't want to open the rear door because we believed it would unbalance the truck too much, and we'd all die, so a couple of us went out the top. Driver and TC stayed in while we got winches hooked up to it, and pulled it back onto the road. I know the Rangers get completely obliterated when they get hit with IEDs. I know that. But I'd still rather drive in them. Plus, it gave me videos like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bnpp8eSV6n4 Thats a nice wide well surfaced road. |

Those mraps are just as useless here as over there. Last I was tracking, they've only penetrated a handful of vehicles, and it took a stupid amount of explosives positioned at the right position, detonated at the right time, to penetrate the armor. Otherwise, you have to use enough force to push the vehicle from the side. All that considered, all the newer vehicles have upgrades that lower the center of gravity and make them harder to roll even though they sit up higher. I hated riding in the MAXXPRO, but it had some power behind it. The RG-33 was our fastest truck though, including all the MATVs |

What everyone fails to realize is that the Humvee was outdated and needed replacing, and the military needed vehicles for Iraq and Afghanistan. The DHS and like organizations just piggybacked because they wanted vehicles like them and the Humvee was never "designed" to be armored the way it is today. Bottom line, it was either these vehicles that were already being bought in bulk, or buy others and spend more money. People just fill themselves full of derp |

Or the "free" ones that Zero already bought with stimulus dollars to give to the various agencies? They don't need armored vehicles. |

They're probably analyzing for worst case scenarios (I'm trying to go the non-tinfoil hat route right now). No idea what those would be other than response to a Homeland threat on a larger magnitude that would allow them to respond. DHS encompasses a lot more organizations these days, including ICE and the Coast Guard. I'm not justifying their purchase or choice of vehicle, only saying there might be reasons and we shouldn't go full derp. |

The problem is, I'm not the "tin foil hat" type but this kind of thing stinks like hell. Are they going to use them to protect the boarders...no. Are they going to use them to combat gangs... no. Well then who the hell are they planning to pick a fight with?

I don't discount the actual purchase of the vehicles, but I would like to know their use, whether it is training, supplementing FBI HRT and DEA FAST, or Border Patrol. But, FBI and DEA fall under DOJ, so that's obviously not it. Wasn't trying to pick a fight, just trying to play a little devils advocate and get people to think. |

Can't find the actual purchase order online but; Apparently it cost $21M [that wasn't cut] from the Pentagon budget to rebuild suspensions & repaint 2,717 MRAPS for DHS/ICE. (Not to mention whatever it cost to buy the Army another 2,717 replacement MRAPS.) So what kind of gas mileage do Zero's new green vehicles get when DHS/ICE is driving around all day not arresting illegals? |

We've had RGs up there, but it starts getting crazy terrain about a mile from there, so instead of walking out to where we were going, we got a ride with the ANP. I was just recording at random times on patrols when I was bored. Nothing happened during that patrol, but it's nice to show people when they ask what it's like over there, because all anyone ever shows is combat footage. I can show them that and say "This is a main road, the people in the truck are the best hope for a successful mission over there, and this is what the kids look like. This is what we did for 90% of the time over there." |

I guess the real question, and the whole point of them(explosives go off and you have to assume at the very least a mobility kill on most vehicles, even a tank isn't immune to that) is how much did it help in survivability in these attacks? As long as the guys inside are still alive, it's a lot better than rolling around in a pickup truck and getting blown into a mist. |

This was complete and utter BS and I've been _begging_ people to prove me wrong on this because had the story been true it would have been pretty big news. |

This didn't take a stupid amount of explosive, it took a small amount. You bury explosives in a dirt road and detonate them under a vehicle, well the vehicle will give first. What was left of the maxxpro flipped down the road and took a crain to recover. I cant tell you how meny times i saw these vehicles destroyed. It goes without saying the people inside are out of the fight. We were hard on our guys about it, but each unit/command is different. |
