In Secret Commandos (great book, BTW) Plaster describes training to shoot five rounds bursts from a CAR-15.

This lack of full auto caught my attention in the "Lone Survivor" movie.

Using google maps I couldn't find anyplace named Nah, New Mexico

You sure it was New Mexico?  Maybe it was Arizona?

This is exactly right.

I've only ever used/seen FA fire in training situations to reinforce proper fundamentals of marksmanship.  It is a great illustrator of whether or not you have a good, aggressive stance.  Other than that single mag dump once per training cycle, it has very little use

Larry Vickers says, in the 25 years he was with Delta - they only used FA (on their Carbines) to establish a proper firing position/grip.
Rob O’neill has said essentially the same, on multiple podcast.

Yep.

7 yards, 30 round mag, one trigger pull.

Should be able to keep all the rounds in the “A” zone with a proper grip and stance.

You bastards, I saw this thread first thing this morning and now I have the sound track to commando stuck in my head.

Friggin nothing but flutes, saxophone, and percussion instraments on repeat.

In regards to your question the answer is obviously METT-TC dependent.

Most likely use of full auto is going to be

Springing a point ambush

Breaking contact

Reacting to  close ambush.

All three situations have full auto use as doctrine depending on SOP in order to achieve immediate maximizing of suppressive fire to achieve or attempt to achieve fire superiority.

But I just woke up and I am prolly being Capt obvious.
