Does anybody secretly wish the Cold War had gone hot? We had a lot of very cool technology that would have had a *very* high entertainment value had we started popping that shit off. Biggest problem would have been no LiveLeak yet. Putting that aside, thoughts?

Umm...how could that have been a good thing in any shape or form?
Yeah!
It was my fondest desire to live like a fucking glow in the dark caveman. Assuming I wasn't vaporized because I lived near an Air Force base. |
What is it with some of you guys, part of my time in service was during the Cold War, we didn't want it to go hot, because none of us would have won anything.
Stupid question, stupid thread! |
Without nukes it could have been interesting. My dad probably would have gotten crushed by a T72 early on though.
Sorry, don't feel like going from room temperature to 10,000 degrees in the blink of an eye!
I'm pretty sure it did in some places for short periods. And a longer period in some places that didn't make the 5 o'clock news everday.
I wasn't conceived yet so I wouldn't of given a shit either way.
No.
I like getting a pizza and playing retro games. Hard to do if you are vaporized or worse surviving that and fighting other people for canned food |
If that means never being born, or being vaporized as a young child.... Nah. I'm good OP.
Seeing as most of my youth was spent on or near one military base or another, and my father was in the U.S.M.C., I rather suspect my exposure to the "cool" aspects of WWIII would have been somewhat brief.
Yeah it would have been cool to see humanity destroy itself with nukes, then we could see the rise of machines... haha jk
I've been on Arf a looong time. And this is possibly one of the stupidest threads I've seen started here. And yes, I fondly remember airplane on a treadmill.

I grew up in the 80's. There were many many nuclear holocaust movies at the video store to scare the living shit out of you...
I think the OP just watched Red Dawn or The Road Warrior, being GD, both.
Maybe The Book of Sig_Prude, he was blind the whole time! |

You’d probably be long dead, or never born, OP. View Quote While MAD and worldwide nuclear winter may not have been realistic, any direct US-USSR confrontation was pretty much guaranteed to go "nuclear hot" at some point. Hence, all the various proxy conflicts of the late 20th Century. |

No, growing up near the world's largest naval shipyard I would most likely have been vaporized.
At the time, maybe.
Looking back, no. I was in an ARNG Combat Engineer battalion. If deployed from stateside, our European AO would have been Denmark. Most likely, assuming no nukes, we would have been pushed back into the North Sea by Soviet armor from the Baltic States and Poland. |
Sort of just for the entertainment. Where I was in Germany they said we had under an hour life expectancy so there is that. The impression I had was that we would get rolled up until reinforcements could arrive. The Reforger concept.
No, the thoughts of millions of people being killed and millions of others trying to survive was never on my wish list.
OP, have you ever been in a war, even a small one? Or a natural disaster? This is one of the most f**ked up threads I've ever seen, even by GD standards. |
OP might like this video series by War Aesthetics:
Failed To Load Title I don't think anyone in their right mind would wish for a war with the consequences the "hottest war" would have had. The effects of a just war must outweigh the negatives and there is no serious way to argue that mutually assured destruction does this. Not to mention a just war should have a clear goal with a reasonable chance of success. |
Well at least there never would have been an AWB by Bush 1, Clinton, and FBHO never would have been elected.
The internet would not have been invented by Al Whore either. The cock roaches would be alive still. |
Hell NO!!! I was sitting in the Fulda Gap for 4 years of the Cold War. Since the Soviets were going to use nukes and chemical weapons from the start, Germany would have been FUBAR. Probably with Russia, America and the remainder of Europe, not far behind.
