So I finally got the #5 picked 4 times. Doesn't seem too bad for a complete rookie

Gotta take a break and do some yard work.

I have a couple S&G locks, have not attempted at all, they have shrouded/doors on the key ways.

I use ABUS when I need a lock, they are so unique most folks wouldn’t understand how to defeat them if all they’ve ever seen was tumbler locks. Better off cutting through the wall than trying to defeat one of those locks they’re so tough.

Never have been able to open a 5200 series, I did open one of the “harder” masterlocks, with no tension tumbler, and security pins a couple times. It was hit or miss.
View Quote
I've opened a ton of 5200 series locks. Some people have luck raking them to a false set, then picking the spools, but I've never been able to do it.

They have 3 serrated pins and two spools, so you have to pick it until it false sets on the spools, then deal with those.

The game changer for me on those locks was a tight fitting top of keyway tension wrench and a .015" deep hook pick.

Anyone know if owning locks picks is legal in NYS (upstate)

IANAL, but a quick google search says about the same thing as IN law. If you’re not using them to burgler, you’re fine. Are there locksmiths in NYS? I bet they have them.

Finally thought to open that chinese lockpick kit I got from woot or tmart. Clear plastic lock. Less than helpful instructions, but after playing with the stuff for awhile, it started to make sense. I was regularly opening the lock while watching TV and doing it by feel.

The lock pictured it a master 410 loto. Some consider this core the best that master lock makes, 6 pins, all spools and one serated.

Unfortunately, I've already made this one a rattle so now I have to attempt to rebuild it.

I own my own business ( not lock picking). There are times I pick 20 locks a day ranging from pad locks, safe locks, door locks, dead bolts, gun locks, car doors, and more. I picked it up as a hobby knowing I'd use it. My line of work it's a must. My pick rate is about 95%.

I picked up a number of pick sets to have, car jigglers, and a auto slim Jim, wedge, and inflated kits. It's all payed itself of within the first day of use.

Well thanks! But really the only thing I found difficult about it was the one serrated pin. The spools actually seem to make it easier than regular pins since they give such great feedback.

Both my disk locks and one master lock are actually more difficult to open.

Does anyone want to help me figure out how to put together a lock picking pass around box kind of thing?

I was thinking about something cheap to ship, like a small flat rate box and throwing a couple of locks in, and mailing it around to give interested people the opportunity to try different locks and maybe different tools.

I have a couple of locks that I wouldn't mind passing around, and I could probably even build a challenge lock.  I just have no idea how to organize something like that.

Yes I'm definitely interested in something like this. I'm bored of my locks to the point that I'm not playing with them anymore. I'm also to the point that I don't want to spend money on a bunch of new locks.

It would be way cheaper to start just passing them around.

So DFARM. Want to set up a little trade? We'll pass them onto the next arfcommer after we are done?

After watching a few pen testing talks on YouTube, I've been paying a lot more attention to alternate methods of entry rather than picking locks. The fun part is that my employer tends to change vendors a lot, so we have a ton of different systems at work for me to mess with. We also have tons of locks of all types, so I have a lot to mess with in that regard too. Of course the fact that I'm allowed literally everywhere in the plant makes this a nice perk.

I'm sure that i have a couple of extra American 5200 series and pac-locks that I can send out. Maybe another one or two odd balls.

The only downside is that I don't have keys for most of them. They all work and I've opened most of them, but I got them by picking locks that were going to be cut off because the keys were lost.

I'll send the locks that I come up with to you in a small flat rate box, then you can add what you want and pass the box on to the next interested person. Just IM me your address and I'll get the box out sometime this week.

Should we start a new thread to manage the pass around, or does the @poisontree care if we do that in here?

It depends. On some keyways there isn't room to use BOK tension. I like to use TOK pretty much whatever it gets me a little more room to get picks in there.

The first top of keyway wrenches I got were the ones from sparrows that have a comb pick on the other end. I don't use them often since they are usually too thin for the keyway. I like a tight fitting wrench, especially when there are security pins as you have a lot of control when the wrench isn't flopping all over the place in the keyway.

I ended up making my own wrench from a hitch pin clip that fits snug for the locks that I used to pick a lot. I'd just make them if you want to try it out. It'll fit your lock better and probably be cheaper to boot.

Yes you do need them in my opinion. I have found a good fitting wrench really makes a difference in how easy it is to pick some locks. Some lock manufacturers make it so the cores bind with bottom of the keyway. I have two locks like that. Also if a lock can't be raked top of the keyway gives so much more room to fit a pick in.

I have both the heavy bar set and the flat bar knurled set from Sparrow and use them all.

Had some supplies come in today so I thought I'd try fixing my master 410 loto that I had turned into a rattle. It was a bit more difficult than I thought it would be but I eventually managed to pull it off. I had chewed up a couple of springs when I disassembled it and the ones I ordered were too wide so I had to modify a lighter spring. Since I ordered the cheapest pinning tweezers off of ebay that's exactly what I got. I had to spend about 10 minutes modifying it to get it to be usable. I also put a piece of tape on the core to keep it from turning into a rattle again it should just lock up the core now but it'll be a much easier fix next time.
