The United States today filed a lawsuit against Edward Snowden, a former employee of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and contractor for the National Security Agency (NSA), who published a book entitled Permanent Record in violation of the non-disclosure agreements he signed with both CIA and NSA. From a report:
The lawsuit alleges that Snowden published his book without submitting it to the agencies for pre-publication review, in violation of his express obligations under the agreements he signed. Additionally, the lawsuit alleges that Snowden has given public speeches on intelligence-related matters, also in violation of his non-disclosure agreements. The United States' lawsuit does not seek to stop or restrict the publication or distribution of Permanent Record. Rather, under well-established Supreme Court precedent, Snepp v. United States, the government seeks to recover all proceeds earned by Snowden because of his failure to submit his publication for pre-publication review in violation of his alleged contractual and fiduciary obligations.

The lawsuit also names as nominal defendants the corporate entities involved in publishing Snowden's book. The United States is suing the publisher solely to ensure that no funds are transferred to Snowden, or at his direction, while the court resolves the United States' claims. Snowden is currently living outside of the United States. "Intelligence information should protect our nation, not provide personal profit," said G. Zachary Terwilliger, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia. "This lawsuit will ensure that Edward Snowden receives no monetary benefits from breaching the trust placed in him."

The agencies that lied to us for decades about violating our rights, even going so far as to lie under oath repeatedly say Snowden is a bad guy and a spy.

Alleged bad guy and spy claims innocence, releases shitloads of data on spying on US citizens illegally others release corraborating data on that as well as extrajudicial killings....

Who to believe...

Too bad we don't have any agencies we can believe in anymore since they have violated our sacred trust.

I’m not necessarily disagreeing but what options do you think he had? The abuse by our government that he revealed says a lot as well.

Let’s face the fact that our government is illegally surveilling its population what he did is a drop in the bucket by comparison.

See that's the problem. The NSA can easily fabricate any evidence they want at any time because they are a massive, unaccountable signals intel agency with excruciating secrecy and vast resources.

Now that we know what they have been up to and that they hold files on every American ala Cold War East Germany, and the fact that they lied abou this for decades, any evidence they have is suspect. They have lost all credibility.

The sacred trust has ben broken. That isn't Snowdens fault, it's the NSAs fault. the American people are the real casualties here. Not even so much as an apology from the NSA, the IC or anyone else and a continuance of the surveillance.

Total slap in the face.

Who am I more pissed at? The NSA.

Law360 (April 26, 2019,  7:39 PM EDT) -- A California federal judge has dismissed a long-running proposed class action over the National Security Agency's alleged unlawful mass surveillance of millions of Americans, saying the challengers couldn't show any injury and that there was no way to move forward with the case without risking national security.

There won't be any.

The case is open and shut contract law. He signed a document stating he knew he was obligated by law to submit publications for review prior to publication. He chose to break that law on purpose and in public. There's nothing to discover.

Snowden did A LOT of damage to our guys in the field. Our side lost good men (our own and allies) because of how he did the data dump. He let it go with all the care and discretion of Stalin or Mao...

I am all for exposing the bad. DO NOT put innocents in the line of fire to do it.

One of the reasons I'm not surprised he fled.  Even if he turns out to be some squeaky clean whistleblower(which is highly doubtful), he has no chance at a fair trial if he ever comes back.

You also know the politicians and bureaucrats that put this plan in place were going to make sure he disappeared if he stuck around.

So much bullshit all around.
