It's a bad time to be an elder millennial.
Elder millennials whom Bank of America defines as those ages 35 to 45 have already weathered a lot of economic storms. They've seen two recessions in their adult lives, a pandemic, and an economy that seemed to be stacked against them from the start. But while the pandemic and its resulting labor market may have offered some economic reprieve, the financial walls might be closing in on elder millennials. That could be chalked up to the lifestyle expectations of a cohort that should be entering a more stable period of adulthood, one that includes comfortably spending, owning a house, and saving for retirement. Instead, they're falling behind in home ownership, accruing trillions in debt, and still scrambling to maintain their lifestyle. Some of the blame rests with the recessions that came before. "The older Millennial cohort is more likely to have been hit harder by the 2008 housing crisis, which potentially set them back financially relative to younger Millennials," Bank of America Institute wrote in their research on homeownership. As Business Insider's Hillary Hoffower previously reported, the Great Recession made millennials born in the 1980s a "lost generation" when it came to wealth accumulation. A 2018 report from the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis found that the wealth of millennials born in the 1980s was 34% below predictions. GOT DAYUM MILLENNIALS |

Not complaining about my real estate portfolio increasing 200% due to covid.
Sold my trailer park last week for something like $2.25m after the debt yield is calculated in. Paid $325k for it in 2019. |

They have a lot of big trucks, fancy SUV's, golf carts, side by sides, and boats through. Based on what I see in my area.

Lessons I’ve learned over two recessions-
1) always live beneath your means 2) never have less than six months cash in case of a financial emergency 3) it takes money to make money. Look for opportunities. 4) never turn down a good thing/ continue looking for something better 5) take care of your health. Life can go from 100 to 0 pretty quickly even if you don’t fuck up |

As a Millenial immigrants these Articles are allways entertaining. I only came to the US a Couple years ago and I am allready way ahead of my peers in the country I came from (and that was a first world country not some shithole)
If I had been born here i would be so fucking rich and a Millionaire before 40. My House (or a house) would have been bought with 10 year ago prices, the 401k gains since 2008 would be sweet af. Every Generation in the US alleays compares themself to the Boomers and expect the same without seeing that Boomers lived in a unique Situation (that is half the world bombed itself into the stone age shortly prior) that is not the Standart, not even in first world countrys. There is still opportunity in this country, and yes it is not as great as it was 20,30 or 40 years ago it is still way better than every other country in the world. |

I'm an old millennial.
I'm quite comfortable. Married to my wife for almost 14 years, kids, owe 1/3 what my house is worth, own 3/4 cars. |

Elder?
At 40, I was flat broke from a divorce. I had a Japanese car, a black and white TV, and a mattress. I retired at 62, very well off. I spent those 22 years working my ass off, weekends and evenings, eating in airports and sleeping in crappy hotels. It’s not easy, but it works. |
|
The whole thing just bugs me. I try and impart my wisdom to the millennials out there but honestly they're too fucking stupid. They are all about living in the moment and instant gratification.
For starters; -Your first tent doesn't have to be the tent you're going to spend the rest of your life in -Look for a nice (affordable) starter tent from Walmart or even a Blue Tarp which works just as good. -Cut back on the luxuries. I'll say it again cut back on the luxuries -You don't need a fancy Coleman twin burner propane stove when a single burner stove is just fine for your needs. -You don't have to have the latest and greatest -Yes we've all seen hot tents, no you can't afford it. -Make a plan and stick to it -Ask your manager if you can pick up a second shift, most Wendys are open until 1AM so that's ample time to make some extra bucks |
|
If they would just pick themselves up by the bootstraps they'd be fine.
Put on a suit, shine their shoes up nice, walk into the nearest factory, and look the boss man in the eyes as they shake his hand. There's a good paying job right there. Combine that with buying a reasonable starter house for $40,000 instead of trying to afford a mcmansion and they should be able to afford a fine lifestyle. They'd probably even have leftover money to take their honeys to the local malt shop once a week. I don't know why those dumb millennials refuse to understand this basic sort of stuff. |

And yes millennials your boomer parents had roommates!! |

What? I dunno.
Lots of us got homes 2011-2016 or so, then we refi in 2018 and again in 2020 and are sitting comfy. Golden handcuff? Sure, totally get that. But I can't afford to not live this lifestyle... it is cheaper for me to stay in CA then it is to move to most red states. |

Very sad, because in 100 years historians looking back will be labeling them the second “Lost Generation.” |

Boomers, gen X, millennials, and gen Z…..who has had it the best and who has had it the worst in order?
I’m not being nefarious, but would like to see how each generation ranks others |

IMHO GEN-X is those that didn't grow up with the internet (last gen).
That means born in 1983/1984 and up. HS didn't have the internet till 1996/1998. |
|
The best part of being an elder millennial is that our parents will kick the can pretty soon and we get to move upstairs, out of the basement. I just hope that they figured the property taxes into my inheritance, which they probably didn't, since they are entitled boomers.

34 year old <------
I don't get too caught up in the boomer vs millennial stuff, so I'm not taking sides here, but as a 34 year old in the trades who's been very heavily 'self made' (no trust fund or silver spoon treatment), I get so tired of the excuses why my peers are failing. For the record, only debt is a bobcat skid steer. Home is paid off, vehicle paid off, no carry over credit card debt month to month, etc. |
