Weird, I'm in that age range and my house is paid off,  my liquid assets out weigh my liabilities, and my retirement savings are well on track

The whole thing just bugs me. I try and impart my wisdom to the millennials out there but honestly they're too fucking stupid. They are all about living in the moment and instant gratification.

For starters;

-Your first tent doesn't have to be the tent you're going to spend the rest of your life in -Look for a nice (affordable) starter tent from Walmart or even a Blue Tarp which works just as good.

-Cut back on the luxuries. I'll say it again cut back on the luxuries -You don't need a fancy Coleman twin burner propane stove when a single burner stove is just fine for your needs.

-You don't have to have the latest and greatest -Yes we've all seen hot tents, no you can't afford it.

-Make a plan and stick to it -Ask your manager if you can pick up a second shift, most Wendys are open until 1AM so that's ample time to make some extra bucks

We were taught. Many just didn't listen.

About to sell my last rental. No mortgages, house and property, no car notes. Just month to month CC debt to get the points and cash back. Retirement account is looking okay, and starting investments for the kids. They can have it when we croak or present a business plan reasonable enough to invest in.

there's always recessions, right when you think things are great, it reverses, happens every time, getting ready to do it again, that's the way it works

the pandemic was Govt induced and fake , strange how it ended quickly and is barely an afterthought now,

millennials have had tremendous opportunities growing up with rapidly growing technology and the internet

In my personal experience, I see a lot more GenX that seem to be irresponsible with money compared to millennials.

I'm doing okay, I don't have much extra money, but also don't have any debt either.  The cost of living is pretty low around here.  Most expenses are just basic stuff like groceries, insurance, taxes, electric, auto maintenance, and maybe some repairs around the house.

In all these threads about money, no one ever brags about how much free money they got from the government during covid. Trillions went out. If you owned a business, you probably got money. Unlike salary or hourly employees that got nothing except higher prices on everything.

I’m an old millennial. We just bought a new home outright (450k cash) and both cars are paid off. Have about 80k in our bank account.

I was 22 in the 08 crash and didn’t have any assets or real bills so it didn’t really affect me. My wife was finishing up law school and got into real estate law doing foreclosures so she made out pretty well financially in the years following 08.

The people 08 really affected were the younger boomers like my parents that got caught with their pants down and over extended and ultimately ended up in bankruptcy.

The hardest part about being an elder millennial is seeing how great the country used to be in the 90's and knowing what hell lies ahead.

Younger people will have never known a world where we were great and free, and the older generations will die off long before SS runs out and the country is lost to the commies. Lucky bastards.

All the kicking the can down the road will absolutely fall on our shoulders right as we get into our golden years. Almost our entire adult lives have been spent in a country at war (or serving in one), we'll have a short respite for 5-10 years before we're back into another 20 year war - probably WW3 which will wreck us.

Those of us who saved a few pennies and built businesses will be the bag holders and we'll watch our life's work get robbed by the commies to pay for more social programs and reparations to the Chinese government after we lose to them.

Millions will be lost to suicide as we have no hope with the knowledge of how things used to be and severe depression from working all our lives to support our boomer parents who were able to pass away before seeing the hell they left to us to deal with, and our retirements gone to support the tranny Gen Z who are now (in 2050 or so) the biggest voting block stealing whatever we have left.

I'm amused how so many people who are blessed with good fortune think they were so much smarter than everyone else.  Yes, many of us made good decisions but there was also the fact that our timing was lucky, or this, or that circumstance all lined up-others did the same thing and got totally hosed.

My only issue has been health problems keeping me from working full time and costing me tens of thousands of dollars in expenses, with the loss of upside on income likely easily exceeding the direct costs. I think next year is going to be the best I’ve had in a long time & I’ll be crushing it over the next 5-10.

Even with all of that I’m still ahead of the curve due to having luckily bought my house at a good time & not having any other real responsibilities. Being 36 with my housing costs fixed as long as I need them to & having a real career with lots of income upside is fine. Just hope I stay healthy enough & alive to enjoy it.

Lessons I've learned over two recessions-

1) always live beneath your means

2) never have less than six months cash in case of a financial emergency

3) it takes money to make money. Look for opportunities.

4) never turn down a good thing/ continue looking for something better

5) take care of your health. Life can go from 100 to 0 pretty quickly even if you don't fuck up

I'm an elder millennial. Far from perfect discipline and choices on my part. Lost my ass a bit in divorces over the years. We had plenty of opportunities. I graduated with zero college debt and bought a house at 24, when they would loan any amount, to anybody.

Only debt I have is my 3% mortgage. More in my 401K than the average Boomer.

The trick is, I don't eat Avocado toast. Or maybe, we had plenty of opportunities, for those with a bit of ambition and work ethic. Those recessions were buying opportunities. Pretending that Americans my age are victims of circumstances is an insult to the history of the human condition. We literally have it better than 99.99999% of people born anywhere, at any time in history.

I think the gen z/millennial switch was flipped at different times in different areas.  I can say that in my area those who graduated in 2001 and earlier are mostly gen z types.  2002 and after are millennial types.  There was a district difference starting with that class of 2002.

cash is crap as they would say. appreciating assets are king. But cash works wonders when you need it.

My assets are 3 to 1 compared to my debt. i passed 1 million years ago.

I bought opportunities when they came up in cash. wheeled and dealed as much as i could. favors cashed in etc.

I never bought fancy cars, watches, or bullshit.

I always looked at the price i paid versus what it sells for. my average rate of return on money invested is 50%, not kidding. I buy in bulk and sell later.

my stocks and investments clear 15-21% and is actively managed.

I do have nice guns and reloading gear, but that has paid for itself 100 times over. that is really my biggest expense/used to be. Im done buying for a very long time, i have all the fancy toys as they would say. I'm really too busy now to even enjoy them.

most deals should be business based not emotional.

Not sure I agree with being lumped in as a Millennial (this is the longest they've stretched the age range).

Nobody is stuck in a lifestyle they can't afford. There's always room for downsizing - a generation that supposedly faced so many economic setbacks should understand that.

I've always tried to live within my means, even if it meant "going without" the luxuries that my contemporaries always demanded.

I'm an 'elder millennial'. Things were going decently until the divorce (and things would have been a lot better if my ex-wife hadn't been the type to spend money frivolously, even though she made boatloads of money).

When we separated and I moved into my apartment, I had almost nothing with me. Didn't even have a chair or a table to eat off of. I remember eating dinner the first several nights here...my choices for seating were either sitting on my bed, or sitting on the floor.

A divorce can financially ruin you and set you back decades. I essentially had to start my life over from almost nothing in my mid-30s.

If they would just pick themselves up by the bootstraps they'd be fine.

Put on a suit, shine their shoes up nice, walk into the nearest factory, and look the boss man in the eyes as they shake his hand. There's a good paying job right there. Combine that with buying a reasonable starter house for $40,000 instead of trying to afford a mcmansion and they should be able to afford a fine lifestyle. They'd probably even have leftover money to take their honeys to the local malt shop once a week.

I don't know why those dumb millennials refuse to understand this basic sort of stuff.
