I graduated college in 2009, into a job market flooded with people who had a master's degree and 20 years' experience that had been laid off, all fighting for entry-level jobs.

Oof, that was me too. Graduated in 2008. Laid off in early 2009 from my first corporate job.

I remember applying for a bunch of "entry-level" positions that wanted 4-8 years of experience. Ha.

That wasn't the worst part.  I would get interviews, and the other people there would have 10+ years experience.

Pretty much this.
I'm 41, married and have a kid.
I screwed myself a bunch by being dumb when I was young, and life has screwed me a couple times as well. I'll fully admit I've got a ton of debt.
We are just barely getting by, but we are getting by, and are able to send our son to private school, and my wife is able to work very flexibly.
In a year and a half, 2 of our major debts will be paid off and my wife will be able to work full time, so things will get better.
Better late than never

This is very out of touch with reality.

I am early thirties, own my home, car, assets, gun collection etc (hell I could technically retire) but im not going to sit here and pretend like it would be the same if I had been born 10 years later. I recognize that shit got fucked and seems to be getting more fucked with each passing year.

Inflation, crazy pricing, gov meddling, interest rates, lack of motivation, screwed up sexual value market/dating , etc etc etc are all real things.

"Working hard and saving" doesnt mean shit anymore for the most part. Youll never get that mcmansion with car and wife with 4 kids by simply working hard and saving like past generations. The most these younger guys can hope for is hitting it big by something like influencing or crypto, etc.

I remember going to career fairs seeing the same company multiple times and they said they were ‘collecting resumés.’ Another guy had his Ph.D and told me he was having companies tell him they’d hire him if he had his own funding.

At least I can actually afford my lifestyle.  I don’t know what this thread is talking about.  Obviously it’s wrong though.

We don't define ourselves as millennials. The generations have been defined FOR us. It's based on when you were born.

This topic would be more factually accurate if it read:

"SOME Elder millenials are stuck in a lifestyle they can't afford"

you know what other statements are also true?

Boomers are stuck in a lifestyle they can't afford
Gen Xers are stuck in a lifestyle they can't afford
Gen Z is stuck in a lifestyle they can't afford

AND YET, all we want to do is talk about millennials.  Hmm..... why is that?

An avocado is less than $1. Bread is cheap too. Maybe you could appreciate how rich you are for being able to afford SPAM.

The one thing all generations have in common is SPAM. Cut into cubes, panfried with Teriyaki sauce, dumped out onto a big bowl of white rice, some macaroni salad and kimchi to go with. It's like a Hawaiian vacation without the flight.

The other thing they have in common is that life isn't easy for the majority. No magic silver spoon. You work scrimp save invest and hopefully some 40+ years down the road you get a chance to rest. Enjoy the retirement you've worked for. Something more than a few vacations, no matter how nice they are.

I guess I'm in the middle part of that, whatever the hell "elder Millenial" means.

Since Obama was elected shit's been rough. No other way to put it. The late 90s were peak civilization IMO. We're only going down since then. Like the meme says, "Born too late to enjoy the fuck around part, old enough to be in the 'find out' part." I know tons of people my age or younger who are smart and hard workers, but are having a tough time. Any metric you want to look at shows the same.

Sorry, but all the Boomers out there really f'd everything up. You did. Own it.

I'm an elder millennial and we got our house for a song in 2008.

Bring on another housing crisis....I need a vacation home.

I understand the sentiment in many ways, as I try to live as poor as possible while making as much as I can. Definitely want some more assets to invest in.

The next crash comes at a cost.  Brad Pitts character really nailed it in "the big short." Every crash means suicides rates increase, divorce rates (and all the problems with fatherless homes) increase, homelessness and health issues increase, etc.

Even if you or I find a way to become rich or wealthy during the next downturn, it will come at the cost of human suffering.  It's not something to celebrate necessarily.

As a Millenial immigrants these Articles are allways entertaining. I only came to the US a Couple years ago and I am allready way ahead of my peers in the country I came from (and that was a first world country not some shithole)

If I had been born here i would be so fucking rich and a Millionaire before 40.
My House (or a house) would have been bought with 10 year ago prices, the 401k gains since 2008 would be sweet af.

Every Generation in the US alleays compares themself to the Boomers and expect the same without seeing that Boomers lived in a unique Situation (that is half the world bombed itself into the stone age shortly prior) that is not the Standart, not even in first world countrys.
There is still opportunity in this country, and yes it is not as great as it was 20,30 or 40 years ago it is still way better than every other country in the world.

As a American born and bred, but from very meager means (I was a ward of the state for four years, a product of no marriage, and poor as fuck) who made my own success in this nation of opportunity, I read this from an immigrant and I appreciate it very much.  You have my respect.

Meh.
We are enjoying some of the best "Quality of Life" in human history. Boomers can be proud of building that foundation. Sure there are challenges (mainly housing), but I have so much more than my parents did at the same age.

The 1960s were not as awesome as everyone thinks they were.
