How far did that Tesla tow that house on a trailer? Maybe they should have used a Ford Lightning F150?

I get it. But they are always touted as "an alternative to high housing costs that will fix everything".
Truth is......it never happens.
Of course, they are neat and in some cases, very practical for the tiniest of percentage of minimalist.
But they end up not being very cheap, "sustainable" or enviro-friendly for the "enlightened" public.

amusingly I think the model x in the picture would probably tow further than a F150 lightning as it has more range, is more efficient, and more aerodynamic.

There have been so many alternative homes for those who crave "sustainability", "environmentally concious" and even the downtrodden and homeless over so many years now, they you would almost expect there to be entire camps full of these.
Mobile ones, folding ones. Expanding ones, freee range bamboo ones, homes made out of recycled hulls left on the plates of the mollusks consumed at Red Lobster and shingled with the cheap plastic lobster bibs.........

The reality is.......
There are none.
Neat concept....but nobody is buying for now.

These are certainly neat, and I do personally like structures like this, but I can't help but notice a trend in housing recently: none of them are suitable for families.

That doesn't seem like an accident to me.

I did wonder and it’s why I made the joke in the poll about Musk’s kids. I heard his baby mama is pretty mad about Elon’s housing decisions.

So, the evil plan is to spread everyone out in these mobile box homes?  Make families impossible, commutes impossible, eventually depopulate the Earth?  And then what?

Let's not overthink this.

10-15% of the adult workforce lives by themselves.  The majority in urban areas, where these things aren't going to fly due to density constraints.  But, there is a decent market for people in suburban and exurban areas who want a low overhead solution that doesn't involve wife beater t-shirts, pitbulls and meth - this would appeal to them.  A larger issue is that of property arrangements.  Some areas have that worked out, others may start working on that, other areas won't.

There’s a real need. A lot of us don’t have families.  The real value I see with these is the ability to drop them on a piece of land and have something to live in that’s better than a camper. Or as a vacation spot. If you build a permanent house you can fold this up and sell it.

I'd live in one of those.   I like minimalist stuff.    Also would be great to buy a cheap piece of land somewhere and slap one of those things on it as a getaway.  People pay more for cars.

I doubt that the need is appreciable.   What does a single wide mobile home cost?

You need to add in any foundation cost, land and utilities.

So they start off by talking about how long it takes to build a house (months) and show a decent house with a 3 car garage. Then they show the Lego house that looks like it's maybe 1/4 the size.

No thanks. I'll take my big(ger) house on more property.

Tiny houses are a bit small for my taste. That being said, a house the size of two average tiny houses, that I could live in.

I have no idea where to look up trailer prices. These are a lot more attractive than most of the trailers I’ve seen and they seem to be easier to move around.

My main point was that there is absolutely a need for single person or single couple housing.
