OPSEC in the field as well, a receiver also 'transmits' to a degree, can be located via directional finding antennae.
Years ago lived in an apt. with down stairs tenant cranking FM radio too loud.
Intermediate frequency of an FM radio was 10.7 Mhz, so tuning that far above, or below his station would block it, kids were little and loved hearing him snap and kick his console radio!
Here is a simple explanation, also how the BBC locates those who did not pay 'their radio fee'.
