WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) today announced a streamlined and user-friendly web-based aircraft registration process for owners of small unmanned aircraft (UAS) weighing more than 0.55 pounds (250 grams) and less than 55 pounds (approx. 25 kilograms) including payloads such as on-board cameras.
... Registration is a statutory requirement that applies to all aircraft. Under this rule, any owner of a small UAS who has previously operated an unmanned aircraft exclusively as a model aircraft prior to December 21, 2015, must register no later than February 19, 2016. Owners of any other UAS purchased for use as a model aircraft after December 21, 2015 must register before the first flight outdoors. Owners may use either the paper-based process or the new streamlined, web-based system. Owners using the new streamlined web-based system must be at least 13 years old to register. View Quote Yay more gov regulation Edited to add... The FAA estimates that in calendar year 2014, 200,000 small unmanned aircraft were operated in the NAS in model aircraft operations. During this period, the FAA received 238 reports of potentially unsafe UAS operations. In order to implement the new streamlined, web-based system described in this IFR, the FAA will incur costs to develop, implement, and maintain the system. Small UAS operators will require time to register and mark their aircraft, and that time has a cost. The total of government and registrant resource cost for small unmanned aircraft registration and marking under this new system is $56 million ($46 million present value at 7 percent) through 2020. View Quote ETA - All information will be public http://www.forbes.com/sites/johngoglia/2015/12/18/faa-finally-admits-names-and-home-addresses-in-drone-registry-will-be-publicly-available/ The FAA finally confirmed this afternoon that model aircraft registrants’ names and home addresses will be public. In an email message, the FAA stated”Until the drone registry system is modified, the FAA will not release names and address. When the drone registry system is modified to permit public searches of registration numbers, names and addresses will be revealed through those searches.” View Quote |

I have an RC car that can get airborn off a ramp. I may need to register that.

Wonder what the enforcement angle is?
Are we going to see ToyCop at the Detroit Aeromodelers Club badging and looking for reg ppwk? |
|
I wonder if I should bulk register about 300 craft for free to cover any future purchases?
I also wonder what happens if you don't. I haven't read that far yet. Seems to me to be another dumbass gov plan which does nothing. Have any of the aircraft near miss incidents been able to read numbers on a drone? if a terrorist wanted to fly drones into crowds do you think they'd register? holy moses the government is retarded. |

Reaping what has been sown........
Letting the government get bigger and bigger over time leads to this shit-many departments that can make their own rules without the need for legislation. I;m sure if we can just vote in the right President next year,we will be on our way to fixing this mess.............. |

So am I reading this correctly? If we fly model air RC, we are now required to register with the FAA?
|
|
Oh how nice, $5 registration fee but they're waiving it for the first 30 days.
Registration is valid for 3 years, just like a real aircraft's registration and you must affix a tail number to the model. I cant wait for the FAA to start getting bombarded by thousands of 12-15 year old boys with their drone fleet calling up and asking dumb questions. What's next, we'll need to install Mode-C transponders and ADS-B out by 2020 on model airplanes too? |

Queue the 1950s style government PSA.
Little Timmy, did you get a new remote controlled helicopter for Christmas? Well that's just great! Don't fly it though, that's illegal! You first need to register it so that everything will be wonderful and safe! Who the hell is really gonna bother to register them? So stupid, FAA is inept. |
|
Now parents will have to tell their kids why their house was raided for containing unregistered flying toys.

View Quote Just wait til a terrorist makes a gps guided bomb and flies it into/onto something and blows it up. Then what? My guess is the remote controlled vehicle at San Bernadino was an attempt to use a R/C transmitter and the RC toy as a remote detonator. Fortunately for us the retards were not sophisticated enough. Just wait til it is a highly intelligent bomb maker with electrical engineering talent who could make shit in his basement all day long from quads to flying wings. But let's go around registering everything under the sun because that will somehow prevent tragedy... Oh... And in before people put fake tail numbers on their shit in the event it gets lost or they have a fly away. "Mr. F5FAA we have this here quad rotor/drone that crashed into the window of a commercial building..." "You say you never flew a done and you only have fixed wing gliders?" "Well yes, our records show you do have an active registration and you live in northern California, and while this incident did happen in southern California we are still going to need you to prove you are innocent." Unless the govt is going to give us all special anti counterfeit special labels/stickers to affix for identification. Because painting tiny assed letters to mark/identify a RC plane is so going to happen. Obviously it is for lost/crashed planes and damaged property liability. |
|
Well at least now if someone uses an RC plane in a terrorist attack they'll have to register it first so we can trace it back to them!
|
|
Cant wait for Amazon an Ebay sales info are forced to be turned over to the FAA and FCC.
Next there will be the no knock raids. |
|
So, do I now need a pilots license to fly one of those in my living room? |

I guarantee you the RC aircraft the terrorist use to down a commercial jet will not be registered.

And exactly who is going to enforce that, the FAA can barely run enforcement on airlines and cargo carriers.
What a fucking joke. Local police can not enforce Federal Regulation according to the obama administration. ( see immigration lawsuit ) |

It seems this is more per owner rather than per aircraft registration, so there is that.
|
|
So how long then until we can expect them to require a license to fly? Private Pilot- Model Airplane single engine land
|
|

Just another way for government to make us a society of lawbreakers and cash in on guilt. Laws that can't be enforced the way they are written but can be enforced selectively on whoever the gov chooses to target.

There were plenty in GD begging for the government to do something about those pesky drones

Yeah, and blister pack radios require a GMRS license. L O fucking L.

Penalty is $250,000 and jail if you fail to register
Thanks for making me safe, .gov! |

Anyone know what the penalties are? View Quote from the FAQ Q: What is the penalty for failing to register? A: Failure to register an aircraft may result in regulatory and criminal sanctions. The FAA may assess civil penalties up to $27,500. Criminal penalties include fines of up to $250,000 and/or imprisonment for up to three years. |
