I will add Open Range to the list.

Lonesome Dove, not really a movie. But it was GREAT!

It didn't take long for a person that doesn't understand the difference between a movie and miniseries to show up.

If you are going to post the best western film, and it stars John Wayne, it better be The Searchers

Unforgiven is a pretty damned good, non John Wayne western.

However, Once Upon A Time In The West is the best because it was written by three great filmmakers (Argento, Bertolucci and Leone) that inserted a ton of homages to the most noteworthy westerns in cinematic history.

What a great entrance for Bronson
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/proxy/CVtIZDnbV6t4Fee8FD9_ITAitLuam3y2Yg1Aluskr-ACFoKn2DQiqX8Ke0eHED2avEdXL7k-7YbhpHKk2xtl4_94iKN7Yq9fBT_o52lUGmmZ9X-akvLNvJefoHdCCKf_HbwTHK0LNVvQKXC1xE5PvLQgHQxHPXiyAA6XxX3hO0On-1AaBiE

Couple that with Morricone's score, complete with an experimental diegetic sound orchestration for the opening scene and awesome intertwining of each character's leitmotif at the showdown between Harmonica and Frank, it's incredible.

Not to mention Henry Fucking Fonda as one bad motherfucker.

Oh, I almost forgot Claudia Cardinale

Lonesome Dove is great as well.

Once Upon a Time in the West is grossly overrated. It would have been far better if edited down to half the length. No, I'm not a Michael Bay fan with a short attention span.

The Searchers is also overrated. Jeffrey Hunter's acting was atrocious.

Top Westerns:

The Outlaw Josey Wales
Unforgiven
Open Range
The Professionals (Like OUATITW, it has Claudia Cardinale, but with better acting and no over-long shots of the characters' eyes.)
The Wild Bunch
The Magnificent Seven
Pale Rider

Also, Clint Eastwood or Lee Marvin > John Wayne.

Duke movies, off the top of my head:

Sons of Katie Elder
Big Jake
The Shootist
True Grit

Others, off the top of my head:

Tombstone
Young Guns
Lonesome Dove
Appaloosa

Movies that I'm not sure if they're considered western movies or not, but are fantastic:

Jeremiah Johnson
The Mountain Men

Shane is #1 by a large margin; no contest.

Little Big Man... #1b.

ETA: Jeremiah Johnson #1c.

Stagecoach... what a movie; solid #2.

The Big Trail... young John Wayne; #2b.

The Westerner; High Noon; My Darling Clementine; The Good The Bad And The Ugly; Outlaw Josie Wales;    ...all good...

I only watched it because it was in the Netflix movie thread. It’s a tragedy that it is such an unknown movie. The acting is top notch and whoever wrote the script was as balanced as you can be in modern Hollywood. It correctly portrays that both sides did ugly things.

Unrelated, as another top western if it qualifies, was the TV series ‘Hell On Wheels’.

Too many Hollywood clichés. Too much artificial, unnatural Hollywood lighting. I liked John Wayne, but James Caan was an untalented dick.

Thin plot, overacted.

Change MY mind.

Phenomenal acting by Bale and Pike. The agony Pike showed in “that scene” was very authentic It really got me in the feels.

My favorite JW movie is McClintock.

Other favorite westerns are:
Unfrogiven
Outlaw Josey Wales
The Good, The Bad and the Ugly
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
The Wild Bunch
Tombstone
The Quick and the Dead
Open Range

Lonesome Dove was a great  mini series.

HONORABLE MENTION: Ride The High Country -with Randolph Scott and Joel MCrea. It was Randolph Scott's last movie; he retired immediately there after and drove home to North Carolina. Joel McCrea only made a few more.
