It is way down the list.  I think it is a Western for people that don’t really like Westerns. .

Shouldn't a "Cowboy film" at least contain some storyline related to cowboys or cattle ranches?

I mean, sure, I guess the antagonist gang in "Tombstone" called themselves "Cowboys." But, can that really count?

Judges?

El Dorado is one of the most enjoyable.

IMHO, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence is the best western movie.

Heretic!!! Blasphemer!!!    Bannanate this man!!!

Actually, they both were damn good.  They were from different eras, tho; apparently Wayne saw "High Plains Drifter" with the rape scene, and said he'd never work with Eastwood.  Too bad; that would've been an epic pairing.

Perhaps I was hasty in my thread title; Western, then.

I like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. It is a great buddy/western movie with "some historical relevance". The revised 3:10 to Yuma with Russell Crowe was pretty good.

Kim Darby ruined the first one.  Hailee made the 2nd.  Lebowski did just good enough for the 2nd to be the winner.

JW hated KD.  Apparently he's not alone:  She's been married four times, one time for just over a month.  Sounds like she personifies the term "Cat Lady".

I look at Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid as an anti-western.

When Leone was making an homage to the genre, George Roy Hill was making a film to kill it off.

Don't get me wrong, I like the film a lot, but it essentially is signifying the death of the western and the time/generation that embraced the ideology of those films.

That is emblematic of the year during which it was made.  Times they were a changin'

Lonesome Dove is most likely the best ever (I know it’s actually a made for tv miniseries). El Dorado is one of my favorite John Wayne movies. Probably right behind The Shootist.

Near-Western? Proto-Western?

How about "refreshing breath of fresh air when it came out, as that era and perspective is wholly neglected in American story-telling?"

Agree. Sure, no cows or cowboys but a frontier movie, so proto-western is good. I was going to say those don't get made anymore but think there are some out there.

But I will stop the hijack since its off topic.

Take a decent story line

add some good john ford type  scenery

toss in some hamfisted romantic bullshit

mix in costner, the death knell to any good movie for 30 years

then rely on the powerhouse robert duvall to make a suckass movie watchable, but still crappy

and thats how you get open range

If you are going to post the best western film, and it stars John Wayne, it better be The Searchers

Unforgiven is a pretty damned good, non John Wayne western.

However, Once Upon A Time In The West is the best because it was written by three great filmmakers (Argento, Bertolucci and Leone) that inserted a ton of homages to the most noteworthy westerns in cinematic history.

What a great entrance for Bronson
https://thumbs.gfycat.com/MeaslyThoughtfulBobcat-size_restricted.gif

Couple that with Morricone's score, complete with an experimental diegetic sound orchestration for the opening scene and awesome intertwining of each character's leitmotif at the showdown between Harmonica and Frank, it's incredible.

Not to mention Henry Fucking Fonda as one bad motherfucker.

Oh, I almost forgot Claudia Cardinale

Well, it happened in the western part of New York.

It is East of Syracuse, which is central NY.

Of course it was the western frontier at the time.

Going to be honest, Open Range is one of my favorite westerns. I don't think it was suckass or crappy. I KNOW it's not AMAZING but it just works for me.

I also think Tombstone, while very good, is the most overrated western ever made.
