I thought the 2005 version with Hugo Weaving was taken from a comic book (graphic novel)

I'm not saying this is better than all the solid contributions above but i'll throw this in since it doesnt get nearly the attention it deserves as a very good movie:

Absence of Malice

solid all around but it's got one of greatest lines in movies:

Now we'll talk all day if you want to. But, come sundown, there's gonna be two things true that ain't true now. One is that the United States Department of Justice is goin' to know what in the good Christ - e'scuse me, Angie - is goin' on around here. And the other's I'm gonna have somebody's ass in my briefcase.

I didn’t know it was a remake. The 1987 version had Scott Glen and Joe Pesci, if I can find it I’ll watch.

Count of Monte Christo

Robert Donat 1934
Richard Chamberlin 1975
Jim Caviezel 2002
Gerard Depardieu version is based on the unexpurgated 800 page book with a cast of 1000’s and runs 5 or 6 hours.

I was thinking more in the sense of leaving him alive would have left it open to a sequel, which Hollywood has repeatedly shown itself to suck at doing.

A much better ending would be if Jamie Foxx was able to diffuse only one of several charges he set before they were armed.  Then putting it in his cell and making clyde decide if he is willing to die to complete his task.

He of course does sacrifice himself after some meaningful conversation with Foxx who is changed by the ordeal.  Foxx in the afterward implements various sweeping positive reforms to the criminal justice system.  The final scene is montage-esqe of him continually climbing the political ladder on that platform, and being sworn in as the attorney general.  While taking the oath a bystander comments on how he should run for president.

Bam, Oscar material right there.
