The answer is always Sonny Crockett and Ricardo Tubbs, Period

Also OP should have distinguished if the detective is police or private.

I watch Columbo pretty much whenever I know it's on.  My dad used to really like it, so I watch it partly for the nostalgia and the memories, but I also watch because its just a good show.

I used to like Mannix, Cannon, Rockford files, Streets of San Francisco, Hawaii 5-0, and some of the others as well - but none as much as Columbo.

I hated NYPD Blue.  I think that was one of the first shows they had the cameras bouncing and jittering all over the damn place.  Absolutely drove me crazy, made the show unwatchable for me..

Died at age 57 in 1991.

Harry O  was a series cut short by the death of the main character - David Janssen.

Actually, it was cut short because Fred Silverman dropped it to pick up Charlie's Angels.  And Harry O's neighbor and sometime girlfriend was cast as one of the Angels.

His neighbor and sometime girlfriend was Farrah Fawcett.

The most realistic police detective show in my opinion, as far as the calls they handled, was Barney Miller and the men of the 12pct.  Having said that, even though they are campy now, shows like Dragnet and Adam-12 made me want to be a cop.

One of my favorites. Lee Marvin plays a great serial killer.  Barney Phillips (Terrific character actor)

Longstreet was great, because he was blind the whole time. Plus he fought those damn dirty apes.

But Mannix? Yeah, when I was a kid, I used Mannix up the neighborhood. Driving my Big Wheel beyond its limits and on the very edge of control, pulling my (cap) pistol at the drop of a hat, jumping over shit and running flat out in pursuit of "the bad guys", and getting chicks (kissing them on their cheeks, or occasionally on their lips). Yeah, Mannix.
