The Lt Col. should never have to be put into that position to begin with.

I disagree that most effective commanders are abrasive. Well, maybe not. In my mind there is a difference between "commander" and "leader". Ideally, you want the person to be both but usually that's not the case. Genuine leadership is rare, while every officer gets a turn at command.

Aside from getting the job done and keeping people safe, every servicemember 'gives a flying fuck'. Command climate is a thing, and when it's bad the unit is less ready and less effective. Bad command climate drives good people out of the service.

I have told lady officers before that they'll never win a pissing match with men. It doesn't matter if she's a superior Soldier/Marine in every way, she'll still be laughed at for trying to act like a man. The way for women to command men effectively is to emulate all the qualities of effective leadership while still maintaining her femininity. Be what men expect from a good lady and from a good commander both, and you can't go wrong.

Not in my experience.

Anyone can crack the whip and beat their underlings "until moral improves".

Tact goes a long way, whether you're wearing the uniform or not.  To me, it sounds like her abrasiveness rubbed someone the wrong way just one too many times.

Her message was sound.  Her delivery may have been flawed because of her personality.

Third Herd, eh? Well, nobody's perfect.

Edit: I *totally* just issued an order to an officer, and I'm gonna get away with it, too.

I was in PI, S.C. on June 19th for my son's graduation. 3rd RCTB, Kilo Company, platoon 3040. I saw her during the ceremony.   She gave a good, short speech.  If I had a daughter in the USMC, I would been relieved that she would have been in good hands and being pushed to do her best.  I hate this for her.

And I'll add this. I don't think you could have "hurt" anyone's feeling of the people I saw there.  One thing pretty cool, they had a swearing in ceremony of 21 recruits that earned their citizenship while in boot camp.  I thought that was kinda neat for those kids and their families.

Second battalion is best battalion.

I will say this for 2d Battalion: during my entire 3-month, island vacation the 1st Bn. chow hall was being renovated, so we had to march all over the battalion areas to eat chow. We ate at 2nd Bn. chow hall during First Phase. At the time, 2nd Bn. had the old-school chow hall, which was just a giant, open room with a chow line and a bunch of picnic tables. The memories of eating chili-mac in that chow hall are forever etched into my memory.

Once we got back from the range, we started eating at 3rd Bn., which had the "new" chow hall with tables that seated 4-6 folks or something like that.

Good times.

Parris Island officials confirmed that range qualification scores improved dramatically within 4th RTB during Germano's tenure. From 2014-2015, average first-time rifle qualification rates for the depot's three male battalions improved from 93 percent to 96 percent, said Col. Jeff Fultz, chief of staff for Parris Island and the Eastern Recruiting Region. During the same timeframe, rifle qual rates for the female battalion soared from 79 percent to 91 percent.

There is no reason at all for 4th Bn to have such a pathetic qualification percentage.  Physical strength has jack shit to do with rifle qualification.  Piss poor discipline and preparation is the issue.

Keep in mind this is merely qualification percentage, not even related to expert qualification, I bet experts were like unicorns over in 4th Bn.

If you want an easy time at boot camp maybe.

3rd Bn was known for training to the highest standards and it always showed on ALL events. As the OIC at the pool I got to see every company come through. Third was always the most disciplined. 1st was decent, second was a bunch of amateurs. Mainly because of micromanaging leadership who imposed too many caveats to the already restrictive SOP. Recruits didn't have the same respect (read:fear ) of their hats.

Same as drills cores. The reason comes down to discipline. Females (both hats and recruits) are catty creatures who run on emotion. When you inject that into the stressors of boot camp and try to compare yourselves to the male battalions, it does not work.  Those characteristics do not bode well for skills like drill or marksmanship.

And range score mean exactly what?  In reality the only metric that matters is total number who enter training compared to total number who graduate.

Scores on drill, prac app, knowledge, PT and even the rifle range are not all that important in the big picture to the Marine Corps for female Marines

Lt. Col. Kate Germano, the former commanding officer of 4th Recruit Training Battalion at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, South Carolina, was found to be "hostile, unprofessional and abusive," according to a command investigation obtained by Marine Corps Times. She was relieved for cause on June 30 by Brig. Gen. Terry Williams, Parris Island's commanding general.

But officers who served with her say she was a blunt reformer who spearheaded efforts to improve recruit training regardless of gender, and that a vocal minority in the battalion undercut her achievements. Germano's tactics, for example, dramatically improved range qualification rates for female recruits.

Germano..."reinforced gender bias and stereotypes" in the minds of her Marines by telling them on several occasions that male Marines would not take orders from them and would see them as inferior if they could not meet men's physical standards, the investigation found.

"What she did when she came is she changed the mentality of the Marines in the battalion and the recruits to not expect a historically lower performance than the male recruits at the battalion," said a female Marine officer stationed at the depot, one of three who spoke with Marine Corps Times on condition of anonymity, for fear of professional retribution. "Almost all the categories performed better during her tenure, just by challenging the training protocol of performing separately."

That investigation, which was completed June 26 and released to Marine Corps Times, established that the relationship between Haas and Germano was strained, but found no evidence of gender or protected-class discrimination, based on a series of interviews conducted by TECOM officials. It did, however, establish that 4th RTB struggled due to inadequate personnel and a high operational tempo, a problem that Germano worked hard to change, according to officers who served with her.

Witnesses alleged Germano took the company to task in a meeting two days after the hike, saying it was the worst she'd ever seen and the Marines in the company should be as embarrassed as she was about it. She also told the Papa Company Marines company that they were responsible for the negative comments in the command climate survey and that she was tired of being blamed, the investigation states.

Another event that illustrates the tension between Germano's attempt at reform and the pushback from her unit came the same month, when she showed the short film "Throw Like a Girl," to a group of new Marines. Created for a Procter & Gamble advertisement that was screened during the Super Bowl, the video illustrates how many take the descriptor "like a girl" to mean weak or ineffective. The class then took a hard-edged turn, according to multiple witness statements, when Germano singled out Marines who couldn't perform three pullups or complete a physical fitness test's 3-mile run in less than 23 minutes.

Allegations that Germano took a "victim-blaming" approach to sexual assault prevention stem from a January brief to officers. Witnesses said she implied that sexual assault is "100 percent preventable" and that "by drinking, you are putting yourself in a position to be sexually assaulted." One attendee said she would not feel comfortable reporting an assault following the brief because she felt it would not be taken seriously.

The investigation found that Germano's personal viewpoints on the issue of sexual assault revealed no malice or bad intent. But, the investigating officer found, her poor choice of words and focus on accountability left room for misinterpretation and left some Marines feeling less safe.

One female officer who spoke to Marine Corps Times in Germano's defense said she had observed her as a leader and mentor who went beyond the requirements of her job to look after her Marines, even taking the time to send flowers to family members of troops who were ill.

"Lt. Col. Germano is direct, and people have a tendency to take it personally," she said. "If it had come from a male officer, there would have been no objection."

To say that out loud in public, will kill your career.

Dumbass.

A4s don't help.

If you can't qual with an A4 and an ACOG there is no way you will ever be worth shit.

a 5'0" chick in body armor trying to qual on an A4 is a joke.  You can't put the ACOG far enough back to get the proper eye relief.

True story.

I can also agree with that, if the A4 is what their duty weapon would be. If, however, they are having to qualify using equipment that they will never touch again, perhaps the qualifying weapons need to be changed to what they would actually be issued.

And that is what I want in a Marine leader: tough ass attitude to mold one of our strongest fighting forces. Everyone knows the Marines are high discipline, tough soldiers and no quarter was given for unmotivated people who do not make standards. Until recently.

Total PC bullshit.

Lt.

Dumbass.

And that gets to her showing poor judgement

That's almost word for word what they taught us in SAPR training.

The instructor said that if either party has been drinking, it isn't consensual.   There was nervous laughter.

This is what I don't get.  How can people be so short sighted?  Would you rather hurt a few feelings, or fill more body bags?  If a series of insults and hurt feelings keeps you above ground, that seems like a reasonable trade off to me.

If you regarded the .mil as door-busters who kill folks and break stuff, then yes.

If you don't really care for the US or the military, and are just using the .mil for social experiments of dubious combat merit, then no, not so much ...

Ahhhh yes, a month.  Perhaps not everyone registers for an account the day they find this site?
Besides, it's not like it takes reading more than 2 of his posts to draw a similiar conclusion.

Meh. Most effective commanders are either bitches or assholes. Hell, most men brag about their assholishness. As long as they get the job done and keep their men alive, who gives a flying fuck?

yeah.

Meh.  My best leaders in the Corps were guys who earned my loyalty though other ways besides being a asshole.
