Quoted: I loved Michigan but was ready to eat a bullet by March every year. SAD is a bitch up there. View Quote It be honest it’s not much different down here, but I’m 30 min to the border of MI. Nobody talks about the Midwest and the fact that it has a whole lotta grey for about half the year. The people are pretty awesome though. Going through Midwest seasons year after year makes you a pretty hardy individual. |

Quoted: I'm stuck here for now. I'm originally from ohio, which is the south of the north pretty much. So michigan is further left than I'm used to. But if you are from California, michigan will seem as conservative as the deep south lol. But there is great sights to see. You are sorrounded by the great lakes in pretty much every direction but south. And if you like to fish and hunt, this is the place to be. If you ever make it to the upper peninsula, you will see the stars and the northern lights unlike anything you have ever seen or experienced. I have never seen a night sky look as beautiful as it did up there. Gun laws are pretty good. It's easy to get a carry permit, no mag limits or assault weapons bans. The only thing that pisses me off is their handgun registration rules. When you buy a handgun in Michigan, you are required to send a form with a copy of the sale's record into your county sheriff's office to register it. Being from ohio, I saw that as a huge infringement of my rights. However, i'm not encouraging anyone to break the law, but lets say you fail to register a handgun and somehow you get caught (which i've never heard of). It's considered a civil infraction and not a criminal one, and the worst that will happen is a 500 dollar fine. But no actual criminal charge, jail time etc. View Quote Used to be much worse. I would love to see some FOIA metadata on that database. |

Quoted: We don't claim Ann Arbor. However, it is fun as hell to wear a pro gun or conservative shirt when you go there. View Quote I had to pick up my mother from St Joe’s hospital after her surgery. Completely forgot I was wearing an anti-commie shirt with reference to Augusto Pinochet. Stopped in at Fresh Thyme and everyone in there was glaring at me like I am a monster. The transgendered cashier started out looking terrified then just looked super disgusted. It’s sad because I grew up over that way and don’t remember Ypsi being such a socialist shithole. It used to just be slightly ghetto. Going back a few pages, the map marked with the red X…. I may have land up there. Might go visit next month. |

My brother and his wife have lived in Grand Ledge for almost 30 years. I visited them a couple of years ago in the fall. MI didn't look too bad, but for being flat and probably the 4th worst winter in the country. Politics couldn't be worse than here in OR, tax burden is about the same, but the cost of living is a hell of a lot less. I guess if I could put up with really cold, long, winter it could be a great place to retire.

Quoted: Actually I'm a Minnesotan by birth. Michigan is home. Home is not where you were born, it's where you stop escaping. When I went to retire, to go home, it was gone. Duluth is no longer the Duluth of 1980, nor was the Chicago suburb I went to school in. I looked for months in Idaho and Utah and eventually property after property disappeared to the point where the inventory for "executive homes" on acres was zero. We bid on two homes in Idaho and lost. I broaden my search and I found parts of my midwest culture alive in Indiana, Wisconsin, and Michigan, made a list of 10 acceptable homes and my wife picked the UP home. I could write books worth of arguments trying to convince you that petite blondes with perky breasts are best lovers, Chicago deep dish is the best pizza, #23 is the GOAT, and Michigan is a wonderful state but ... personal taste. I actually missed weather, rust, and bugs working in California for 20-years. I missed the earth being alive, the clean air, and freshwater of the midwest but mostly I missed the people. I'd put up with a lot of bad things to live around good people. It didn't matter than the weather was fine in CA because I hated everything else*. My wife and I have been here in the UP for approaching three months, just two of them in our home. We are changing many of our normal behaviors because of the quality of people in the UP. When I closed on my house at the Trust office there's that moment where they slide the keys to the new property to your home. Nope, not here. "Welcome to the UP, congratulations on your new home, we don't have the keys for the property. In the 20-years the owner owned the property he never locked the home. The home is unlocked and there's a pile of keys in a bowl that might unlock some of the doors". We go to town and have to remember to leave our doors unlocked. We leave the garage door open while we're gone. I haven't locked my shop in in the last month or so. I do take the key out of the ATV when I leave it out overnight on the lawn. We put our dog outside in our unfenced yard for hours without worry. I have a dozen rifles sitting in a glass case facing the front windows. I haven't had to put up cameras or install an alarm system. I don't worry about getting robbed while walking around town at night. My gun safe is empty now as I haven't gotten around to stuffing it again. In my SoCal suburb safety and security were major concerns, not so much here. The outdoors here is great. I spent hours on the trail system yesterday and enjoyed the day. I'll do the same today exploring a different trail. I crossed a pair of wonderful trout streams (on bridges) a dozen times. Come on big guys can put on some DEET and enjoy God's country. Free trails weekend ... I'm out for more hours this morning. https://www.ar15.com/media/mediaFiles/202/IMG-1248-2061694.jpg https://www.ar15.com/media/mediaFiles/202/IMG-1235-2061695.jpg * With the exception of my wages which were exceptional. Quoted: OP, Are ya looking for a Hootch with property? How about a working farm, 14yr old house in a 10A mature woodlot, Lake Mich 3 Miles away, Dozens of lakes nearby, multiple rivers, Public tail for the sled at a rear corner of the Field, that is open for hiking, Biking, and horseback, as well as X-country skiing and sleds in the winter. Only one neighbor on the road, with Deer, Turkey, and small game in abundance? Gotta sell in the fall. I'm done farming, and the wife got a transfer option out of state. Bought the farm for the field, and a place to build our forever house...That didn't work out. Did I mention Two pole Barns, and multiple wells, and LOOOW taxes, with a next to zero crime rate?? We have some amazing shoreline, and if you like archery deer hunting there are few better places.
Winter can be harsh, but that’s counter-balance is part of what makes the summers so dang nice. And then we have places like the dunes areas, the straights, the Kewenaw and Garden peninsulas that are veritable gardens-of-Eden for part of the year. And the Great Lakes are true jewels. |

Certain parts of Michigan can be pretty nice and I still have some family up there. Having spent a lot of time hunting , fishing , and just visiting the west side of the lower I always felt it was a place that old hippies went to get away. As those old hippies got older and had kids they started to influence the political direction of certain areas. There are still some solid republican type areas , but old hippies and the auto industry ruined many places.
Still , it's a great place to explore and I had some great times hunting and fishing there. |
