Are Chaldean party stores still a thing?
This is probably a mostly Detroit / SE MI thing I remember a generally great selection of alcoholic beverages, home made/store made salamis/sausage/jerky, pizza, some even had ribs and in at least one you could drop your deer off for processing. |

If Northern Michigan got their act together to form their own state, it would be a damn nice place for a conservative to move to. Hell even Thomas Jefferson proposed the creation of a separate Northern Michigan!

I'd guess your biggest shock coming from CA will be the winters. The last few seem to last at least 5 months, and it does get a bit tiresome. Ann Arbor people kinda blow, generally. Although Detroit is pretty much a shithole, if you stick to the downtown pockets, it's fine. Yes, NW areas along Lake Michigan have some super liberal places, you can still enjoy vacations there without it being a factor. UP is stellar. It's like a whole other state.

Quoted: Your wife doesn't love Christmas as much as I do. View Quote @SolidState How many Christmas gifts have you bought already? A package just got delivered, a Christmas gift my wife had ordered a couple weeks back arrived. I asked her if it was the first one for this year or she had purchased others, she responded it was the first package. The package itself contained multiple gifts in it. When I mentioned this thread she agreed that you might love it more but quickly followed up by saying she wants to make a trip up to Bronner's as she saw it mentioned in the other thread. |

Quoted: OP, Are ya looking for a Hootch with property? How about a working farm, 14yr old house in a 10A mature woodlot, Lake Mich 3 Miles away, Dozens of lakes nearby, multiple rivers, Public tail for the sled at a rear corner of the Field, that is open for hiking, Biking, and horseback, as well as X-country skiing and sleds in the winter. Only one neighbor on the road, with Deer, Turkey, and small game in abundance? Gotta sell in the fall. I'm done farming, and the wife got a transfer option out of state. Bought the farm for the field, and a place to build our forever house...That didn't work out. Did I mention Two pole Barns, and multiple wells, and LOOOW taxes, with a next to zero crime rate?? Quoted: What part of MI? I've been curious about Lansing beings it's come up at home. View Quote Lansing's not great. It's a beat up looking town with crime. They had a pet store we'd go to a lot, it's where I got my cat...and Lugnut games were kinda fun. I didn't really care for East Lansing either to be honest. I enjoy the campus and some spots on Red Cedar, but otherwise, just a normal town. I'm not very outgoing, I'd usually go straight from school to home in Dewitt, and I enjoyed Dewitt with it's Meijer, Little Ceasar's, a Chinese food place across the street and Mexican food place, and lots of places to run or go fishing nearby than I did in East Lansing. To me where Michigan shines is when you go north, away from the college towns, away from Detroit. |

Their new and renewal side tends to hire a lot. Experience is a plus. You WILL work a lot of OT and probably do some travelling. On the plus side you then have bidding rights to get into the gas lines and gas service side as far as gas and other union [yeah yeah, it pays well and a F off is plenty for the VERY few libs] jobs. |

My experience of living in northeast ohio for my whole life and mid michigan for the last 2 and a half years has been this. The sun does come out a lot more in Michigan than ohio, and it seems like ohio got more precipitation (at least ne ohio), however when Michigan gets storms, they seem to be more violent and severe than the average ohio thunderstorms.

They cover most of the thumb of Michigan. If you can get work outside of Detroit then it you can work in some really areas or rural areas. They train everyone employee how to manage down lines and every down line needs someone watching them until they fixed. That means lots of paid OT which is great...the only problem is the major storms are ice storm in March and thunder/wind storms around July 4th. Their tree crews are completely contracted out. A lot of the line crews are contractors as well. The day to day tasks are/were employees though, such as line inspections and pole testing. It was/is a solid company. I walk in the shop, all encased in bullet proof glass, and the guy behind it said "You should not be here. Do not go back outside". Thankfully a gun nut I worked with happened to leave a few minutes behind me, saw my car and stopped. We decided the best move was use his truck and push my car 5 miles up the road to a slightly safer area. I have no clue what would have happened if he hadn't shown up or stopped. I'm sure everyone I worked with has retired or moved on now, as it was 1996-1999 when I worked there and most people were around 40 or older then. |
