It's really difficult to know. ODMP claims that line of duty deaths are down 2% over this point last year. That said, it's always difficult to know whether the total number of assaults are going up or down because those numbers aren't reliably tracked. Improvements in medical care also keep officers alive that would have died of similar wounds in the past. I think what might have changed is the brazenness of some of the attacks and the motivations of the assailants. The fact that individuals in authority are remaining silent on the matter (or even quietly cheering on the criminals) is also new. View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted:

2014 (and 2013) were quite low compared to previous years: 2014 = 117 2013 = 107 2012 = 126 2011 = 171 2010 = 161 2009 = 125 2008 = 148 2007 = 192 2006 = 156 2005 = 163 2004 = 165 2003 = 150 2002 = 159 2001 = 241 2000 = 162 I suspect 2015 will not be seen as some particularly dangerous outlier year like 2001 was (because of 9/11) Note: this is total LODDs, not broken down by cause (shooting, vehicle crash, heart attack, etc) View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted:

Is this an actual uptick, or are we just reporting on it now because of the #BlackLivesMatter stuff? Honest question. I've never seen the stats. The year isn't up yet, but there was a significant spike in 2014. 47 officers murdered by gunfire in 2014...23 so far this year, I believe. (And that doesn't count other forms of violence like assault, struck by vehicles, etc) Most everybody I talk to expects 2015's numbers to surpass 2014's. 2014 (and 2013) were quite low compared to previous years: 2014 = 117 2013 = 107 2012 = 126 2011 = 171 2010 = 161 2009 = 125 2008 = 148 2007 = 192 2006 = 156 2005 = 163 2004 = 165 2003 = 150 2002 = 159 2001 = 241 2000 = 162 I suspect 2015 will not be seen as some particularly dangerous outlier year like 2001 was (because of 9/11) Note: this is total LODDs, not broken down by cause (shooting, vehicle crash, heart attack, etc) With all due respect, that makes the rest of your post invalid. The only accurate indicators from those years would be 1) shooting deaths, or perhaps more appropritely 2) intentional shooting deaths. |

How many active manhunts are going on in the area? Fox Lake and the surrounding towns are a decent suburban area. I think this is the first murder there in a few years. The whole county has 15-20 murders a year and that is mostly Waukegan/North Chicago. There are a lot of LE agencies in the county, and they aren't holding anything back trying to find these guys. |

How many active manhunts are going on in the area? View Quote I'm referring to how many murderers are not pursued in the Chicago land area, mainly the city. They typically do not search for/catch them. I understand that this will have a greater response since it was officers that were killed and the area. |

I have a hard time taking a site that lists K9 deaths alongside police officers killed very seriously, and the format doesn't make year-to-year comparisons very easy, but here's what I found (for gunfire, excluding accidental): 2015 = 23 (so far) 2014 = 47 2013 = 31 2012 = 48 2011 = 68 2010 = 59 2009 = 47 2008 = 41 2007 = 67 2006 = 51 2005 = 53 2004 = 56 2003 = 48 2002 = 57 2001 = 65 Unless there's a very large uptick in people shooting police, this year will probably finish out with fewer cops intentionally shot to death than previous years. The reality is that, with almost a million cops in the country, and incidents of shooting deaths in the 40-70 range most years, it's probably not a great candidate for statistical comparisons. It's quite rare, and we should all be thankful for that. |

The reality is that, with almost a million cops in the country, and incidents of shooting deaths in the 40-70 range most years, it's probably not a great candidate for statistical comparisons. It's quite rare, and we should all be thankful for that. I think that's one of the reasons why to truly know whether things are "getting worse" we need to know the actual numbers of assaults on LEOs. As I mentioned earlier, those stats are not reliable tracked or reported so the deaths numbers are all we have to work from, as they are relatively reliably tracked. Additionally, even just a couple of decades ago, the death numbers would likely be higher than present due to improvements in body armor, medical care, etc. Officers are alive today that would have died had they faced the same assaults and wounds in 1980. I can say that the current climate feels different/worse than it has at any point in my admittedly short lifespan, but feelings are not a reliable statistical measurement. However, as you stated, gunfire deaths are fairly rare. For that I'm exceptionally grateful given the fact that my dad is a LEO with 33 years experience, and many of my close friends are also LEOs. |

This is what happens when you let children throw temper tantrums without punishment. All these fucking subhuman shitbags that were blocking trains, burning buildings and destroying infrastructure should have been locked up for the max sentence allowed. The ones assaulting innocent people should be tried for hate crimes and attempted murder. The ones killing innocent people should be hung right in the middle of their ghetto for all to see. Some news sources are reporting there was a press conference with fox lake police or Lake county sheriffs office stating there were 3 suspects at large, 2 white male and 1 black male. Officer that was killed was making a traffic stop and pursuing on foot when they lost contact with him.
I can't find any transcript or video of the press conference. |
