I thought l read they were looking at investigating Cohen's wife too.
That could further explain why he said Trump told him to pay with intent to influence the election. Protecting his wife. |

They don't have to prove the motivation, they are trying to prove that Mr Trump is a pathological liar, discrediting his assertion he fired Comey over how he treated the Clinton email investigation, so they can charge him with Obstruction of Justice by inferring Trump fired Comey to torpedo the Russian Collusion investigation. Trump claimed he didn't know about Cohen paying off Stormy, among other things. They have Trump himself bragging to the Sunday shows about firing Comey instead of putting it all on the original investigation and memo signed off by Robenstein, who initiated the whole Special Counsel in the first place. Sometimes he really shoots himself in the foot running his mouth and Twitter account. View Quote |

You know as well as I do this has nothing about proving anything against Trump in a court of law (as if they could while he is president). Hell, they know Trump can pardon himself and everyone else for any crime they can come up with (except impeachment). This is about guilt by association. They are trying to make sure he either doesn't win re-election in 2020 or make sure he is a lame duck the entire time. View Quote |

Quoted: Not so sure the verdict is in as to whether the president can actually pardon himself. While it has also been said that a president can pardon anyone he wants, it has also been said that if the purpose of the pardon is to let someone off so they do not give evidence against the president it can be challenged. View Quote He said that there would be no prohibition from 0bama pardoning himself on his last day (or anyone else including Clinton) as presidential pardons are absolute. The constitution is clear, the president can pardon for anything except impeachment. The only penalty for impeachment is removal from office (upon conviction of 67 or more Senators after a trial presided over by Judas Roberts), nothing more. |

They're trying to claim that the payoff was related to the campaign. If Trump has an extensive history of paying off women to keep quiet, that could be used to prove that it wasn't related to the campaign - that it's standard practice. Wouldn't it be hilarious to watch liberal heads explode if a pattern of paying off women is actually what puts this to rest?

He might be able to beat this.
But Cohen's "credibility will be very much at issue," Dershowitz said. "He's already an admitted liar. "He's basically pleaded guilty to lying. "The government is going have a hard time basing a case purely on the credibility of Cohen himself, unless they have corroboration." Dershowitz also questioned the payments Cohen pleaded guilty to arranging. "Is it a campaign violation if the president, in fact, paid for the hush money?" he posed. "It isn't. He would have had to report it. "That could be a violation for the campaign." But the retired professor also highlighted Cohen's implication of Trump was not mentioned outside the courthouse later in the statement from Robert Khuzami, the deputy U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York who oversaw Cohen's case. "I wonder if the U.S. Attorney's Office is going to stand behind that part of the plea, or whether the fact that they didn't mention it — and they mentioned everything else — may suggest that they're going to watch to make sure that's true," he explained to Bachman. "That they don't want to put the credibility of the office behind that particular statement in the guilty plea," he added. "I read something into that." |
