Yep, pretty much this.

People gonna do people things, though.  Not like it's a new phenomenon.

Really though, in addition to the health and nutrition concerns listed above, I think there's something wrong with using a pet animal that's being given away in the hopes that it will have a better life.

I mean if you're the first person taking it home and it's never known anything other than the farm/breeding center, hell I don't really care as long as you pre-kill humanely. (Live feeding, unless your snake refuses to eat any other way, is not a good idea.)

An animal that's known humans and been cared for as a pet, and that is adopted with the expectation that it will continue to be a pet, is something different. I don't think many people here would give their dogs away knowing they'd get squashed by a python.

I would tend to agree...

My HS science teacher raised pythons.
Once a month, he checkout the Sunday paper for  the " Free kittens" ads.(1970s)

Take his two young daughters, and they'd each pick a different kitten. He'd tell them " Just one!" And they would argue and tear up.
So he'd give in, "Aww heck, you can EACH have one!"

Then off to the next place for another performance.
Rinse and repeat.
that's shitty.  I know,  nature,  but that's shitty.  Rats, I get, but someone that can feed a healthy kitten to a snake, is a psycho.

There are lots of exceptionally rich and successful people that do inhumane and despicable things.

Your argument is like saying “well Jeffrey Epstein is really successful and well known  so let’s ignore the whole child trafficking thing.

Nope, thoughtful, caring man who gives back.
Just liked snakes more than cats.

Wasn't inhumane. Euthanized and frozen.
Glut of unwanted kittens?
Problem solved!

I used to work with brothers from El Salvador.  They would "adopt" every guinea pig, rabbit and god knows what else they could for their children.

Two guys would just get a random neighborhood kid to go with them. Then eat them.

Well...  One night they got into a tiff and one stabbed the other to death.   So maybe both??

In all honesty though a lot of feeder rodents come from breeders who produce them as pets, for shows, etc.  The ones that go as feeders are culled from the breeding or pet programs because they don't measure up to the show standard, and don't have the temperament to be pets.  You do not want a 10# rabbit mad at you; it will fuck you up worse than a feral cat will.

I admit I laughed, but WTF.

Nothing can be more certain than his daughters turning out completely normal and well-adjusted.

Yep. No way would I feed someone's ass hamster to my snakes. Not worth the risk to the health of the snake.

Same way I don’t feed yard insects to the spider. It’s taken 8 years to get her to size. No way would I give it a cricket covered in pesticide.

Used to raise both meat and show rabbits, had as many as 200 at times.
Once has obvious pair of reptile people approach me and ask if I sold to " snake people".
" Your money green?"

LOL, just kill, freeze, sell.
No.skinning or gutting.

Also a,way to get rid of culls from.your line, without the risk of others getting your genetics.

Hadn't thought about the genetics thing.

I also get stillborn kits, chicks, etc.  The colubrids and smaller boas go nuts for them.

The bigger snakes are eating stillborn lamb, goat, and piglet these days.

Agreed. Especially if done without humanely killing prior to feeding
