There are many tons of fuel rods in the containment pool of the #4 reactor. That containment pool is currently open to the elements and it is leaning. The crane used to remove the fuel rods is currently in the containment pool, it fell in during the earthquake/tsunami/hydrogen explosion. If the water drains out of that pool, the fuel rods will burn, releasing more Cesium than anyone has ever seen. The experts do know exactly what the danger is, and they are scared shitless. I do believe you are correct but I think what you mean to say is they are scared shitless of the thought of another once in a century earthquake. I may have read the same article, but I think it says there is a fair chance in the next few years of a quake big enough to dump the building. They also said they may try to pump concrete in under the pool to further stabilize it. |

The problem is if it get out to the bottom, no one (relatively speaking) give a shit if it gets out the top. But how to you construct a stainless steel basin under a way-too-radioactive-for-humans reactor that is on pillars on the ground that has no holes in it? If you could do that, then you could make a dome and pump it full of concrete and not worry about it much.

As a point of interest, since the Chernobyl accident, a large area around the Chernobyl facility has been cleared of all humans except a very small force for security and to keep the rest of the Chernobyl facility running and maintained. In this large area, free of human habitation since the late 80s, nature has returned, and in a big way. Though radiation levels have been continuously at what are definitely considered dangerous levels ever since the accident, wildlife has flourished and believe it or not, it's healthy. If it's found in the Ukraine, it's found near Chernobyl. Everything from rats and mice to wolves, bears, and deer. And they're all healthy though many of them were born in the area and have lived their all of their lives. They're being monitored for health and for possible mutations, and so far, they're finding statistically insignificant numbers of mutations. Meaning, really no more than in the rest of the world. Nature has ways of dealing with these things. CJ |

Except that any isotope readings are going to be what is visible on the husk or skin, which would be getting washed off the fruit before it gets eaten. But . . . maybe I should set up a Maya 2012 site? Figure out something expensive to predict what will happen? Get suckers good people to help me figure out how to fleece use their money to help buy a new car save them from the Zombie Apocalypse. Should do it.

The two unaffected reactors at the Daini site, immediately to the North, are also shut down, perhaps permanently. The #4 reactor at the Daiichi site was in an outage at the time of the quake, and all of it's fuel was in the spent fuel pool. Hydrogen leaking from the #1-3 reactors bled into the #4 secondary containment, causing the explosion in that unit. There is an extensive reclaimation operation ongoing, where all of the radioactive debris will be put into some sort of dry cask storage. It's an effective solution, albeit tedious, and nothing like the hail mary operation to "encase" the Chernobyl site. |
