I have a little orange plastic thing I can affix to mine to avoid that whole "He's got a gun" thing... I use it when ever I'm not someplace where realistic prop replica's are expected. Though I've never walked down the street in costume... I did use it when doing club recruitment booth duty for the SciFi club in college.
