I have tan/coyote/FDE/whatever the fuck color you want to call it, all from the same manufacturer, and almost none of it matches.

This. Fabric dyeing is not an exact science.

this is cool.

This caught my eye.

http://www.hyperstealth.com/coyote/P1020527.jpg

according to this. Tan 499 is what sopposed to be "tan"

and "coyote tan" is just another name for "coyote brown" etc.

so this seperates Coyote Tan, with Coyote brown away from "eagle Khaki, Tan," etc.

You're on the right track.
The OFFICIAL US Marine Corps color is Coyote Brown 498. Contract gear HAS to be made in this color.
The OFFICIAL tan that goes with Multicam (OCP to the US Army) is Tan 499.

If it isn't  USGI issued gear, or specifically state it's Coyote 498 or Tan 499, then who knows what you'll get.
Don't expect one manufacturers so-called "coyote" to match another's.

Seriously, you're overthinking this. Get the gear you need, in the colors closest to what you want.

ETA: You're whole color matching exercise is futile to start with. did you know Multicam has ever-so-slightly changed its colors over the years?
Ever compare a set of Marpats to one another? The greens in one pair may not match another.
Shit, I have a pile of "smoke green" Paraclete pouches and not one of them matches another

From lightest to darkest in my experience.

Khaki
Tan
FDE
Coyote

I prefer coyote, though I might go green here in a bit.

Yup, its what im trying to do. I made this thread to find the differences. It's logical to think "khaki" and "tan" are different things since they are called different names. I didnt know how much they varied.
