His actually personality is asshole douche, so it's easy.

He plays the exact same character every single time no matter what the movie.

Tom:
What's he doin?

Droz:
He's finishing his senior thesis. Pigman is trying to prove the
Caine-Hackman theory. No matter what time it is, 24 hours a day, you can
find a Michael Caine or Gene Hackman movie playing on TV.

Tom:
That's his thesis?

Damn, never realized that was Hack!

Loved him in Bat 21, Enemy of the State, and that Western with Sharon Stone. Bet he got some of that a$$.

He was a good cop in Narrow Margin, and at least on the side of the good guy in Enemy Of The State.

Not sure you are understanding what the OP was conveying.

How was little bill a POS? Munny was the bad guy.

They were both bad guys.

I like that he usually plays the bad guy.. he's good at it.

Little Bill was a great character.

And...

Deserves got nothing to do with it.

He plays the ship captain in Behind Enemy Lines. He's a good guy.  Also Uncommon Valor is a good movie from the 70's.

He's a huge prick in real life, known for being a huge dick, treats people really shitty. He made some chicks cry on the set of The Royal Tennebaums and Bill Murray almost beat his ass.

Bill Murray almost beat his ass? LOL. Yeah right. I'd like to see that. Gene Hackman is an old ornery jarhead. Last time I heard from him he punched out a driver in a dispute

He played a hard ass / sonofabitch in Crimson Tide but the character was still one of the good guys.

I went to school with his nephew. I also know a man who used to get into rock throwing tiffs with Gene when they were kids. Hackman grew up not far from where I live.

Sheriff Billy was a bad man.  But he's the law and so what if he kicked the snot out of the Duck of Death.

Love that flick.

Retirement from acting

On July 7, 2004, Hackman gave a rare interview to Larry King,
in which Hackman announced that he had no future film projects lined up
and believed his acting career was over. In 2008, while promoting his
third novel, Hackman confirmed that he had retired from acting.[19] When asked during a GQ
interview in 2011 if he would ever come out of retirement to do one
more film, Hackman said he might consider it "if I could do it in my own
house, maybe, without them disturbing anything and just one or two
people."
