I really liked the ones with neblewerfer(sp) attached or the version with a 50 mm.

Germans had some Damn fine looking machines.

I always wondered how well they worked off road and how hard they are to steer...

what was the point of them? any advantage to have wheels on the front as opposed to just having tracks?

The Maultier was born when they grafted the suspension and track from a captured Bren Carrier on to a truck.   They continued to produce the design because it was a cheap way to make something that would work in the Russian mud.

I wonder how well it would compare to one of our M113 APC's. Probably pretty well I bet.

The Krauts loved those things and they do look cool.  They're just not that practical and very few armies field them in the modern era.

Ours were demonstrably better.

Powered front axle, non-interleaved road wheels, and a unitary band track instead of metal links.

I bet maintenance on the road wheels would suck. Having to remove two wheels to access the rear one seems like a lot of extra work.

Ability to use a standard truck motor and transmission.  Just needs a short driveshaft and the "rear axle" drives the tracks.

The Germans loved their interleaved road wheels but it was a stupid design.  Mud builds up between the wheels and freezes overnight, vehicle can't move in the morning.

Because ours were better  At least compaired to the 250/1 models.  More horsepower, front wheel power,  and more interior room.

I was wondering the same thing.

I bet the old M113 is superior

....but the German machine looks much cooler.

the 113 looks like it's exterior was designed at 16:25pm on a Friday

Probably a OT-810. Postwar Czechoslovakian copy of the SdKfz. 251. The Czechs produced and used them up into the 1950s.

That is what I understand as well.

Ours were better.

Theirs didn’t have front wheel drive.

Ours did. And was more powerful.

They drove/rode great from what I read, better than ours, but ours were much easier to build. They all burn the same on the battlefield.

Yup. Same problem with Panther and Tiger, except those road wheels are all paired, even the narrow ones.  So you have to pull off four to get to one to repair.

And almost always with those silly interleaved road wheels.

Break the inner wheel and you have an unnecessarily complicated repair job. German engineers love to over complicate things.

I've driven a fully converted Czech OT-210 to SdzKfz251 specs.  Steering wheel is kinda weird, angled downward from top of the steering wheel closest to the driver angled forward and towards driver's feet, so all u really can grab is 10 to 2 o'clock.

I think the point of wheels was the wheels steered; no complicated steering of the tracks.  The benefit of the tracks was they lowered ground pressure so the vehicle didn't sink in the mud and get stuck like a fully-wheeled vehicle would.

The problem is that on mud the steering wheels .... didn't.

They were an interesting idea, and damn cool to look at, but an evolutionary dead end.  Pretty much nobody is fielding half tracks anymore.

Yep.  At best it might have kept them in the war long enough to get nuked.

There's no alternate universe in which Germany wins that war, aside from not fighting a war on two fronts.
