In no particular order

Hendrix - his breakthrough style, putting holes in speaker for distortion, influence on everyone else

Jimmy Page - dude is great and inspired everyone

Tommy Iommi - not the greatest picker, but dammit that guy started metal

Van Halen - not a huge fan, but his style, speed and influence surely puts him up there

Roy Clark - this man does not get enough credit to what a guitar badass he was

Nuno Bettencourt -  my personal favorite, just amazing tone, speed, harmony, uniqueness

Your list is your own OP and thats ok.

Keith Richards and David Gilmore wouldn't even make my top 10.

Steve Via is a great technical player? But has very little soul in what be plays.

Prince is beyond this list imo. He was exceptional at every instrument he played, and was almost undoubtedly the most prolific musician ever. Most people write him off as a freak or only know his popular songs but that guy was the greatest musician of our time. But, as a guitarist he belongs on this list and damn near the top.

By your definition, which I agree with, Gilmour is the first that comes to mind.  I'm not too familiar with the old blues guys and am a huge SRV fan, but Gilmour is the most emotional player I can think of.

This will be a thread of people listing all of their favorite musicians who play guitar, so eventually all of the greats get mentioned.

As soon as Paul Stanley or Mick Mars get mentioned, it is time to shut it down. If Jack White, The Edge or Taylor Swift get mentioned, it is time to nuke it and try again.

I foresee this thread confusing “best guitarists” ever with ones who got lucky by being in bands that gained great notoriety.  I’ve seen no mention yet of Warren Haynes or Jimmy Herring, Steve Kimock, etc.

Best guitarist and best song writer or composer are not the same.

Yngwie Malmsteen can play circles around every other name that'll be listed in the thread.  His music style isn't the greatest.  And most of his songs just become watching him show off with sweep picking arpegios.

Fastest is not greatest either.  That's not to discount Mr Malmsteen but he is famous for being fast.
