I am in college and I live in a old house, first floor, by campus. Lets just say that crime isn't awful but isn't great either in the area. A lot of college kids live by me and as my firearms collection grows, I'm scared of a break in as I work nights. I do not have a closet and I can not bolt down a safe to the wall or floor. What is my best course of action? I have a budget for a decent safe but I could be moving around a bit. I would prefer not to move a heavy safe alot and if I don't bolt it down, it could be stolen anyway. What to do??? Sorry if this has been killed before, I couldn't find any situations quite like mine online. Thanks for any input.

Buy guns you can carry with you. Carry them.
Or rent a nicer place. |
|
I mean I cant take my guns everywhere. Especially on campus.
Renting a nicer place is out of the question at the moment. |

Ive tossed the idea of moving most of it to another location but i would like to at least keep one of my Ar's and handguns at the house. Is just hiding them enough or what?

I would rather have a safe that's not bolted down than nothing. Mine is not bolted down, empty it weighs 400 lbs or so, yeah it could be taken out with a dolly but it's better than keeping them under the bed or stashed in a closet. Get a safe.

Approximately how many guns?
I have seen some real nice hidden compartment furniture like coffee tables or book shelves. It can pretty expensive though. And they're still not locked up, just hidden. |

Modular safe. Easier to move around.
Sure bolting is more secure and a safe could be stolen. But it's way worth it to have one anyways. They aren't all prepared to haul away or break into a safe. |

View Quote I think the bigger issue is with a large safe not being bolted down isn't so much it being carried out as is the possibility of it getting pushed onto its back side which make prying at it much easier. |
|
you could go with a larger but still not terribly heavy safe (look and see how hard it would be for you to take the door of to move it possibly)
then, when its in place, load the bottom down with some heavy weight (you do have some brass and lead you can put down there, right?) also, look into a good insurance policy. keep quiet about what you have and be sure you've got whatever documentation you need in case insurance is needed |
|
I just had to move a lot of them to my house as where i was keeping them didn't want them in the house anymore. I have 12 here ATM but i should be able to move them to a trusted secure location but I want a AR, mags, ammo and Handgun by me at all times at least. I'm a little paranoid or prepared. take your pick.

Stop growing your gun collection until you can properly house it.
If you must, bolt it to the wall...then go to YouTube to learn how to patch a wall. |

If you have one of those tiny little closets with the bi-fold doors, you can hang them on the interior wall above your head. Not many people would think to stick their head in and look up and back. Hidden in plain sight, that's what I did for a while
|
|
I would run it by your landlord, tell her you will patch the holes when you leave.

get a safe, and keep it in a back room out of sight from a casual visitor
also no nra magazines, parts ,shells etc in plain view. when going to the range, disguise your rifles/cases with a blankets when going to and from the truck. keep your mouth shut and don't trust your neighbors, smile ,wave and be polite but don't trust them. think layers |
|
Maybe there's a "safe" type store where you can leave your guns. I know my buddy stashes some things of his at a store that you basically rent a safe and they don't question anything you put in there. They don't even require a name for you to sign up.

I hid mine in my box spring.. I cut the fabric toward the front corner nearest the wall, to about a third of the fabric.. Placed them in the slats, zip tied them down, and stitched it back up. I had a shooter or two that I kept out and that's all my friend knew about.
I felt better, and even though I never got broken into, I did feel safer for a while until I moved.. My theory was, a snatch and grab might lift the first mattress, which I kept 100 bucks, a nicer knife and a cheap ring, for him to get in the hopes he would move on. Hide 200 bucks worth of stuff which you would be hella ok with losing, but not too hidden he can't find it, so he/they will score something and not look anymore.. Think like a crook of you will.. Unless you show your shit off, then I can't help you. |

Patching a few holes in drywall is a piece of cake! You can also drill into a floor with carpet if you know what you are doing. Get a piece of copper tubing a little larger that the drill bit. Work it into the carpet until you hit the flooring( helps to make a small slit). Then, just drill the hole through tubing! When you remove the safe, just rub over the hole and the carpet will cover it back up! |

Keep AR and handgun at most, hide the AR real good if you must have it there as well. Stayed in an apt 2 years of college, no roommates I'll add, and did just this. Pistol was easily hidden, Tantal in a tennis racket case(along with some desiccant) and under the bed. No way in heck I'd lug a legitimate safe to a temporary dwelling bearing in mind foot traffic while you're moving it in, and folks visiting your residence. Also might add, probably not a bad idea to separate the upper from the lower so far as the rifle goes. My .02

Alot of good ideas. How do yall feel about a job box disguised as a trunk for a safe? I feel like I could probably do it in a weekend.

1. Bolt the bitch to some studs in the wall then patch the holes landlord probably won't know
2. Get some renters insurance and record all serial numbers 3. Or stash all but what you need at your parents house and still get renters insurance anyways it's like 100 bucks a year 4. Or move 5. Get a super heave safe 6. Store at campus PD if is an option 7. Don't buy anything else 8. Loose lips sink ships 9. Be careful who you let in 10. Claymore your apartment 11. Disregard #10 12. Buy a Dutch sheperd, get a sign that says "warning beware of dog" 13. Get a Chihuahua, train It to attack genitals 14. Move (can't stress this enough) 15. Renters insurance (can't stress this enough) 16. Stack on safes are cheap and can be bolted to walls. Patch well and bolt to studs landlord will never know. 17. False wall If you can't make one of these work idk what to tell you. |

buy a jobox and fill the bottom with ammo, top it off with rifles. throw an old blanket over it and set a lava lamp on top.

steel locking cabinet in closet, bolt it to a piece of plywood that covers the entire floor of the closet, then stack other stuff on the board.
|
|
After reading the op again, I don't think you have any options.
You don't even have a closet. The limitation by your landlord leaves you ultimately vulnerable. A non bolted safe is better than no safe...and I feel the lack of a closet really limits your ability to hide the guns well. |

If you don't lock them up, at the very least perhaps consider removing the firing pin from the AR or maybe the bolt and store it elsewhere. If you have a dresser, couch, or so on I'd recommend hiding them, over an easily found safe. Discretion in what you do/say are best. Also, any firearm related decals on a vehicle are advertisement. |

A modular safe may be easier to get in and out of apt.

I bolted down safes when I rented. First I was never foolish enough to ask for permission. Second I spent a lot of time and some money patching up the holes. Always got my security deposit back in full minus any of the places that charged for carpet cleaning despite it being spotless. |

Maybe not convenient; can you access the attic area?
Maybe a lighter safe like a Homak or better, and bolt it to the rafters in the attic? |

Bolt it down. Patch the wall with plaster. If the floor is wood, fill it in with wood putty and and sand it. It it is carpet, it won't be very noticeable at all. It it is a slight problem when you move out, it will be a minor financial penalty. Do clean the place up very well.
