I saw Social Distortion for the 8th time a couple years back. They closed with an acoustic rockabilly sounding version of Reach For the Sky that was fucking incredible.

1977 ( I think).
Yes. Heart of the Sunrise. See avatar. And yes, Rush haters can suck it. |
|
|
Yes, Full Circle tour at The Back Yard Austin, TX.
Anderson, Howe, Squire, Wakeman, White. They played Close to the Edge, and it was the best rendition I had ever heard of that song. Must have gotten some pollen in my eyes. |

the first time I saw ZZTop was the first time I heard them do Viva LasVegas. Didnt even know they
did that song until then. Absolutely blew me away. |
|
Charlie Daniels doing the Legend of Wooly Swamp. This was at a small outdoor concert just as the sun had set good. And the field we were in was surrounded by woods. It really added to the atmosphere.
|
|
"Take The Highway" by the Marshall Tucker Band. And RUSH sucks.

This song live. about the divine right of one Swedish king. |
|
Pearl Jam at Red Rocks. In the middle of Rearview Mirror, Eddy stops the song to chew out a couple guys fighting in the front few rows. He berates them, tells the crowd "Sorry, there are a couple of knuckelheads up here", looks over his shoulder "1...2...3...I couldn't breathe...." and right back into the song where they left off, and the band picked it up perfectly. Never have I seen that happen at a show.

Metallica, 2004 in Austin, "Sad But True"; it was just an absolutely awesome performance of the song that worked. I have never heard it played that well since. "One" was also a highlight of that show.

Alter Bridge, last October.
Myles played an acoustic version of Watch Over You that lead into another tune I can't remember because I was overwhelmed with memories of my father in law who died a couple months earlier after a months long bout with cancer. I've seen a modest number of other amazing shows but none got me like that. |

First, Rush haters can suck it. Second, I was at a Rush concert a few years ago and they did "Grand Designs". I don't know why, but it really was the song I enjoyed the most in the show. www.youtube.com/watch?v=mIRTfQc3raY View Quote I was at that concert! |
|
Day on the Green at Oakland Coliseum, 1978. Cheap Trick, AC/DC, Blue Oyster Cult, Journey, and Ted Nugent. Lights (in the City) by Journey blew me away even though I was there for the harder bands.

HURT By NiN. 1995 or so. I saw MM as the opener for NiN.
When he played HURT it literally took me out of the concert hall and I felt the song. I cried, it blew my fucking mind. |
|
Jellyfish in 1991. They did "No Matter What" by Badfinger and completely blew me away!
The live versions on Youtube suck but this version is off their live CD so it's probably the best one out there. In concert, it sounded like this! Jellyfish: No Matter What |
|

|
Deep Purple at the Forum in Inglewood (LA) California. It was very hazy up in the nose bleed section when they played Smoke on the Water.
|
|
Eric Clapton in 2006. It was the 3rd time I saw him in concert. He played "Got To Get Better in a Little While" and it was fucking awesome. Saw him a few years ago when he toured with Steve Winwood, and they did Hendrix's "Voodoo Child." (Not VC Slight Return.)
The Who back in May. "Eminence Front." FUCK YEAH. Someone else at the show got it on video: Billy Joel last year. "Vienna" and "Zanzibar." |

A ridiculously great band! First saw them live in Florida during MTV Spring Break and was gobsmacked. Then saw them once more, one last time at The Academy in June 1993 during their tour promoting "Spilt Milk." I can only describe them as an incredible mix of Queen, the Beach Boys, ELO, Cheap Trick, 10CC, and the Beatles. Throw in performing those harmonies live, all the while the lead singer is playing a stand-up drum kit. I've written it here before, I have been to at least a couple hundred concerts in NYC over the past 20 years and Jellyfish is the one band I would pay a wholly irrational amount of money to see reunite and perform live just once more. One of the many stand-out performances at The Academy was "Joining A Fanclub". Here's a version recorded at the Warfield during the same tour. |

It has the same sort of vibe to me that Gimme Shelter from the stones has. I often play them back to back. |

Quoted: Depeche Mode I love hearing "Enjoy The Silence" live. View Quote Last time I saw them was in 86 for Black Celebration at the Merriweather Post Pavilion. Fly on the Windscreen kicked ass in that show. ETA Studio version. also, as an aside, I can't believe the hook from this song hasn't been sampled in a hip hop song yet. |
|
Eric Clapton....If i saw you in heaven was fucking AMAZING!!!!
|
|
RUSH doing Subdivisions live 2010.
Peter Frampton doing an unexpected instrumental cover of Soundgarden's "Black Hole Sun" last year. |

My friend had a band, I really didn't think I'd like it but I did...
I tend to have a good idea about the songs bands have when I see them live. Quoted:

999.
Homicide. Long time ago. And there have been lots of concert performance that really hit me. But I've been going to concerts since 1969. Best from recently: Halestorm. I Like It Heavy. |

Heck, I'm surprised to find anyone who has even heard of them!! Jellyfish was actually my first concert and I've only been to maybe a dozen since but they set the bar high. I've never seen a live concert video of Jellyfish that even comes close to actually being there. I count myself fortunate to have seen the first incarnation of the band when Jason and Chris were still members. I never really warmed up to the second incarnation's line-up. Have you checked out Beatnik Beatch (Andy and Rodger's band before Jellyfish) and Imperial Drag (Roger and Eric's band after Jellyfish). I'm one of the few lucky people in the world who actually owns the Jellyfish box set. |

Metallica - Orion
Saw it at both Big 4 shows (California and NYC)...I never thought I'd ever get to see them play that. Blew my fucking mind. Honorable mentions: Slayer - Spill the Blood (VERY close second) Metallica - Disposable Heroes (tied for 2nd place w/Spill the Blood) |
