I went for a woods hike today and some little forest critter busted through the fallen leaves about 3 feet away from me. I jumped up in the air like Tigger and slapped my holster like John Wayne.

Or been in the woods and felt like you were being watched, or even stalked? I was in the woods once hunting grouse in dense brush along a river. I came into an area that could be described as a marsh or swampy lowland. I was making my way through the dense underbrush when I heard the footsteps of what was clearly another man or two-legged something. I crouched down and sat still for several minutes. Hearing nothing, I began to move again, only to hear the rustling footsteps resume. I crouched again and peered through the brush in all directions, trying to see what had also stopped and was now listening and looking for me. This went on for several cycles as we seemingly stalked each other in a circular pattern. Finally I came to the entrance of the trail I had walked in on next to a large open field. I walked backwards across the field toward my car, watching the tree line for the thing that would soon break cover and rush me, but nothing did.

There is a fantastic Bigfoot story about a kid and his buddy running to his buddy's house while something thrashes through the woods next to them. No, not the Cowman.

I grew up in New England in an area that was heavily populated by Indians. As a kid I would walk through the woods and explore every inch of area within a few miles of my house.

One summer day I was exploring a new area. There were  lots of huge boulders spread out through the woods. Some good sized open areas but mostly heavily wooded.

It was starting to get dark and I was trying to find my way back to the road when I can across a hug boulder that looked really cool. It was about 10 feet tall and at least 15 feet across. When I can around the side of it I saw the head of a horse painted on a flat part of one side. It was about 3 times the size of a normal horses head.

It was brownish colored and looked really old. At first I thought it looked really cool, and I started looking around to see if there was anything else painted on any other boulders near by. Then I got this weird feeling like I was being watched.

I started getting creeped out so I thought screw this and started heading back out. As I passed the rock again I wanted to take one more look so I could get my bearings and show my brother later.

The next day I took my brother out there to show him. But the freaking rock was no where to be found! I mean this boulder was huge, there’s no way I couldn’t find it. We looked in the area all day and never found it. I found various places around where it should have been and areas I recognized, but even after multiple trips back I never found that boulder again.

It was like someone didn’t want me to see it again. Very weird!

Couple times I've come up on fresh Cougar kills in some pretty dark timber . Incase you don't know a Cat will kill its prey , eat a little , then kinda half ass cover it up and go lay down to digest.  Usually within eye sight of the kill.  And they are pretty territorial of the kill . Needless to say the 10mm came out of the holster and I removed myself from the scene extremely cautiously and quickly  . Buddy killed a 7' 152lb male the next day off one of the sites.

On High buck hunts ( backpack Wilderness hunts ) I've spent a few nights awake with the pistol just a little closer ,  because the woods just went quite . Went from  crickets chirping regular woods at night background noise to nothing instantly.  Had an uneasy feeling , hairs stand up like I'm being watched type feeling come over me . The hunts are usually hike / horseback  in for 6-7 hours and never see another person after the Trailhead ,  until you hit the Trailhead again 5-6 days later . So I know it wasn't another hunter

I've walked in on freshly snow covered  trails , that my tracks are the only ones in . And when I come out a Cats decided to track me for a couple hundred yards.

My friend and I went into the woods one morning following an old woods road. We had a pack of coyotes Yipping and howling  on both sides of the road that paralleled us as we went along which is pretty disconcerting. I finally got sick of them fired a my rifle into the ground and that drove them off or at least made them stop.

I will say that most of the swampy areas I have encountered in the deep woods create an uneasy feeling. I attribute it to a genetic memory.

When I was a teenager. One morning while walking to a treestand, it was a full moon low in the sky and heavy fog, it appeared that some bizarre and dark bipedal apparition was walking directly at me. I stopped and it would stop, just standing silently just yards in front of me, watching. I damn near had a for-real heart attack during that intense standoff.

It was my shadow. It turned out to be nothing more than my shadow was cast in front of me creating a very frightening illusion.

I thought that at first, then thought it to be too high. My impression, though, is that southern black bears seem to get much bigger. Little to no hibernation and no apex grizzly bears. Am I wrong on this?

I grew up on a farm in Coastal NC. Back in the 90’s a wildlife biologist decided to get his master’s degree studying the black bear. He drew a 5 mile wide circle and used our farm as the center. We grew about 250 acres of corn and it made a fine feeding ground for bears. The biggest one he tagged weighed 700 pounds in the summer. It would be a bit more than that fattened up for winter.  That one never got shot and dad and I only saw him once. We thought someone’s cow had gotten out. Only when we got close and it stood up did we realize it was a bear. I swear it looked like it stood ten feet tall.

The biologist tagged about 500 bears in a 2 year time. Most were 250-300 pounds, quite a few over 500 and several that exceeded 600 pounds. Then they opened up rifle season on bears and the population dropped drastically. I haven’t seen a 400+ pound bear in years.

They do love to shred trees at their highest reach. They are just marking their territory.

Walked in bowhunting in the dark, walked out and there were fresh cat prints tracking me in the soft damp soil. That area is "supposed" to not have any cats but locals all say they've been there since the fifties.

we used to walk down the country road and climb around under this small bridge with a few friends. set off bottle rockets, etc. one time we went down and looked over to see two dead german shepherds and 3/4 big cattle feed bags full of dead chickens someone had just thrown out. The dogs were stiff as a board. We left after a bit and came back a few days later to all of them and the bags being completely gone. no feathers no bones, nothing.

The scariest thing I encountered was a black stump in the dark walking to my stand.  I thought for sure it was a black bear and just flat out froze while my heart literally skipped a beat.

The second scariest thing was a turkey that roosted on the ground in some brush and didn't take flight until I was 2 feet away, scared the bejesus out of me.

Yes. Numerous meth camps and cook sites,  and burned out, stripped cars.  Once I found a small pine tree that had been cut down, limbed, then planted upside down in the middle of a trail.

My buddy found an abandoned cabin he was afraid to go in. I went up there later and somebody had cleaned the place up, and put an old coleman stove inside.

I've told my ghost story numerous times in GD, we encountered something that tried luring me closer, then screeched at us right after my buddy walked up. Twist my arm and I'll tell it again!

I'll post a pic of the creepy stuffed animal tree I found, once I'm at the computer with all the photos on it.

Oh ya, so fucked up that I'll never enter an area of woods again not will I hunt alone in any woods.

In 2003, I was late season hunting Muzzle loader season in Dec. Hunting hours in CT end at sunset. I climb off my stand and start trekking back to my truck. In a distance I see a person just off the trail, about and 8th of a mile from the parking area. As I approach, i realize its a game warden . I raise my hand , waive and he acknowledges me.

As i walk up, he asks if I'd seen anything or heard anything, then asked me for my license and then
Wanted to know where I was hunting and who I was with. Explained that I had a tree stand and pointed in the general direction and told him I was alone. He gives me my license back and I proceed to hike out to my truck.

By the time I get to my truck it's dark and as I approach the lot, I can see a car with lights on , it's not uncommon to see another hunter, but they are far and few between. Well i get to lot and it's another game warden in his truck. He signals me over, asks if my gun is unloaded and asks for my license and he gets out of his vehice. I expained I just given it to officer Parks on the trail a little while earlier. He looks at me, looks back at my license and said who? I again told him. He went onto say he was the only officer on in the area and no other warden was. I grunted and said ok fella, go tell that to your fellow officer Parks on the trail who just checked my shit
Now I'm getting pissy because I'm cold and don't wanna deal with his shit. He snaps back, there is no officer Parks. Now he's geting snappy with me and thinks I'm breaking his balls. At some point he figues out I'm not fucking around.

He gets on his radio inside his truck and starts communicating with whomever. I knock on his door and point up the trail and said here comes your boy now. I had seen a flashlight up on the trail and figured it was him. Well officer Monday jumps out of his truck, looks and tells me to hang tight. He walks up the trail and as he does I lose sight of the flashlight that was coming down.

I start my truck, take off my shit and secure my gun and jump into the truck to warm. I'm waiting there for a little bit and I'm starting to get really annoyed. Officer comes back, hops in his truck gets back out and comes to mine and atarts asking me for a description of the Warden on the trail ect ect ect.... within minutes local cops start to show up and fill the parking lot. A couple take off up into the trail with the Warden and another with me. I get ID'd , want description of the person again and at this moment I completely realize something is fucky and whomever was on that teil earlier wasn't a cop / warden.
Q
After a while, the possy of cops and the warden get back to lot, they never found him and again same shit description of the person, what did they say ect ect ect. I come to learn through them, that Officer Parks was a Warden but has been long gone and they aren't sure at this moment, but it may have been a general wacko pretending to be a cop/ Warden.

Anyway, I leave and the entire ride home I'm like WTF just went down . . I was so fucking freaked out, I just left my stand in the woods for a week and had two buddies come with me to retrieve it after the season ended.

Some time had passed maybe 10  or so months and I learned that I had come face to face out in those woods with William Devin Howell, a now convicted serial killer

was approached by cops and DA to testify. I had no fucking intentions of involving myself and made that abundantly fucking clear to the state.

In hindsight. Something was off with the encounter. Uniform wasn't the same as real Warden, neve asked me if my rifles was unoaded, he was fat and out of shape and just didn't seem as polished as a genuine cop/ Warden. I don't even remeber if he had a gun belt.

To this day, might I add, I will not hunt until dark unless I'm with a hunting companion. I just won't.

1) Hunting out in my woods last year with my nephew.  It was after dark and we were done hunting for good so we had to drag my ground blind with us.  Pitch black, up ahead of us something let's out a shriek.  Lasted about 2-3 seconds but not like anything I'd heard before.  Can't really even describe it.  If I had been out there by myself I'm pretty sure I would have headed the other direction and left the ground blind till next season.

2) Same woods, probably 20 years ago during hunting season again.  I was out in the field facing the woods in the late afternoon.  Overcast and late enough in the day you really couldn't see into the woods at all.  Hair on the back of my neck started to stand up.  Decided to head to the house and call it a day.

3) Camping with 3 other guys outside of Mason, WI on some property one of them owned.  Around 3am me and my buddy sharing one of the tents heard some rustling outside.  Coals in the fire were going enough to cast some orange light but not enough to see well.  We could see something but thought it was racoon on the picnic table getting into the food.  Just then a human shaped apparition runs past the back of the fire pit.  Just barely enough light from the coals to be seen.  My friend and I were both like ... "holy shit ... did you see that?!".  Within a few seconds we realized it was our friend that owned the land.  He was a night owl and stayed after the rest of us crashed for the night.  He was blitzed on Crown Royal and stumbled past the fire pit because he tripped.  Fucker was lucky he didn't land in it.  Total horror movie scene type of thing, at least for a few seconds.

One time I went out with a buddy and his new trijicon patrol m250IR. The thermal monocular was honestly one of the coolest things I've ever seen, but we were just walking around in the forest, its pretty open as its all old growth deciduous and pine, with a pretty thick leaf layer on the ground. We were seeing a lot of animals and random heat sources when we found clear, humans footprints thru the thermal. We followed them for a while, probably 20 minutes when they suddenly just stopped. Like I mean stopped, like vanished. The steps just ended in the middle of the forest, like the person was lifted into the air and disappeared. As soon as we saw it we suddenly felt like we were being watched, and we both booked it out of there as fast as we could. That feeling of being watched was maybe the most unnerved I've ever felt in my life. I don't know how for the life of me another person coulee got that far into my property, we were miles from any road and no where near the walking path that goes back there. And even if someone did get out there, we had no idea how their tracks could simply disappear like that. Also just thinking about that feeling has me creeped out, it was all really weird

An occasional glimpse or tracks of some of the big cats the Wildlife Dept swears aren't here are probably the most unnerving

Other than that, the one event that really got my blood flowing was while walking through a pasture of ours I passed right by a brush pile that started rustling and growling, I froze for a second, and then a big dog comes leaping out and running for me fast and angry. I found out how quickly I could get rounds through the Marlin 39a I happened to have with me while walking backwards. I dropped that one and the noise made 3 or 4 others I hadn't seen yet take off from right on the other side of the pile.

A few people out here are bad about letting their dogs run loose and neglected and they form packs, pick up strays or dumped off pets, and go feral, take down cattle and cause all kinds of trouble.

Out doing a solo hike when I was around 21.  Decided not to spend the night alone on a mountain so packed up and went back to the car, this is probably around 8pm, dark already.

On the trail down,  probably around 5 miles length, felt something watching me.  I only had a LED headlamp.  Nothing nearby when I turned,  but I saw eyes reflecting, maybe 50 yards out.

I'd walk a bit, turn, see them.  Continued for a good while, no idea how long.   Being SoCal, I suspect a cougar, but who knows.  I'm guessing it was stalking me but never did approach all that close.

While deer hunting, I had a bobcat sneak up on a baby rabbit about 30 yards in front of me before.  I saw it about 150 yards out crossing a field.  It went into the woodline and stalked the edge looking for a snack.  Amazing how quiet a cat can be when they're hunting.  I can only imagine what an experienced big cat is capable of.

Oh ya, so fucked up that I'll never enter an area of woods again. I was greeted by a game warden who wasn't alive. No time for details now but it was confirmed later that the warden I made contact with had been dead for several years and this was confirmed by the current game warden who services the area.

Totally not in the woods, but...  I used to be a fireman.  When I was really young, an older Captain told a tale.  When he was much younger, he was a Police Officer in the same city, in the late '70s.  As a police officer, he investigated the suicide of a man that jumped out of a balcony of a tall hotel.  The man was decked out in classic disco threads for a night of dancing.  Later on in his career, he was a fire inspector.  Sometime in the late '90s, he shows up at the same building to do a fire inspection, except it's been converted to apartments now.  The manager apologized to him, saying that her maintenance man who was to lead the inspector through the building had just quit. The hotel manager said that the maintenance guy saw a guy dressed in disco clothes walk into a storage or mechanical room that he shouldn't have.  The maintenance guy followed him to ask him not to be in that room, and when the maintenance guy went into the room it was empty, prompting the maintenance guy to quit on the spot.

What's odd is that the manager of this building had no idea about the suicide from 20 years earlier.  Creepy.

I love on 255 acres, which is pretty big for mass. No people anywhere near me, land is posted and trespassing is almost nonexistent.
