Having hernia surgery in a few days.
Double inguinal, but both are small. Will be done laparoscopic. How bad is it? What am I in for? Update 12/28: Holy fuck am I sore. I think the pain when I tore my MCL was more manageable, mostly because I could immobilize it. Can't do much for this. Pissing sucks, and I am terrified of coughing or taking a shit. I'm rocking the whitey tighties, ice packs and I submitted and took the pain script. Gonna be a long few weeks I bet. |

I had two repaired about 16 years ago.
One was inguinal, the other was umbilical. They gave me tylenol 3 with codeine for a reason. |
|
Had the same thing done 3 years ago
First 2 days is painful to sit down, walk, lie down, bend over. Eat liquid foods cause your not gonna shit for several days and you want it to come out very easy.5 days for me to poop Walk around several times an hour, its better for the healing than sitting around Keep surgery area clean and apply new bandages after shower. A month later i was picking up 80-90lb items like before the injury.Take it slow each person recovers differently |
|
Your nutsack will collect extra fluid. Mine swelled up to the size of a grapefruit. Lie flat and prop your nuts up. Tylenol, Percocet, then Tylenol. The Tylenol works best for me, but the Percocet is just better at night. You may end up with hematomas, not really a big deal... But when the swelling goes down, the hematomas may make it look like you have four nuts...

I had an umbilical hernia done about 6 months ago(I know not the same). But I’ll be honest with you, I had a horrible experience. I woke up in the worst pain I’ve ever been in in my life. I’ve had other surgeries but never woke up like this before. Maybe it was air in my stomach or just the fucked up hospital I’ll never be going back to again. 2 doses of morphine and a pain pill did nothing to help.
I spent the next 3 days dreading getting out of bed. Pain pills did nothing to help either. It took a week or more before I could sleep on my side enough to be comfortable(hate sleeping on my back). Took stool softener and wanted to cry for a week getting down and up off the toilet. I don’t think I had a normal experience, but I’ll tell you this. I would have rather had another ACL revision and 9 months of therapy than that 2 weeks of hell from that hernia repair. |

View Quote Needless to say i was very careful for 4-5 months with anything heavy and used proper lifting techniques Area still gets tight sometimes even 3 years later,Dr said that is normal. No swelling of nut sack for me although they said it could happen |

I had the same as OP. Swollen balls and don’t skip pain meds. I slept through my alarm for meds because I felt okay on day one. Tried to get up to piss a couple hours later and couldn’t get out of bed. Pretty bad pain. Wife had a hard time moving me. Didn’t miss again for the rest of the week. Slowly weaned myself off to Advil and was out picking up sticks in the yard by day 10.

I was out of work for 2 months. It was pretty bad for the first week. Even getting out of bed sucked. After the first week I was not in too much pain but just couldn't lift anything heavy.

Oh, hell... I forgot to mention the most important thing...
Wear TWO PAIRS of tidy-whities!!!! The elastic will help hold dressings in place And The extra support of your ballsack is invaluable. Do not doubt me on this ( not Rush)!!!! So help me Jesus... Don't forget the two underwear thing! |

I had a gigantic Inguinal hernia done laparoscopically in 2000, by a Dr. Thomas Harmon in Tucson AZ. He used some kind of mesh and iirc some spiral tacks.
They gave me a shot of morphine and sent me walking Within a few minutes of waking up. It hurt for a couple of days and I took some Vicodin but within a few weeks I was rock climbing and cycling again. No junk swelling, no other side effects. I was 23 and in good physical shape so had an easy recovery. The burning, stinging discomfort, not really pain, that I had been living with for the last couple of years prior to the surgery took a couple of months to subside, and it didn’t totally disappear for over a year. But after that’s it’s been BAU for the last 17 years. Total success. |

Ice the nuts
Drink apple cider Watch a lot of t.v. Take your pain pills You're first morning wood will hurt but you'll also cry tears of joy |

I had a double inguinal a few years ago and the other posters have pretty much nailed it.
only thing I can add is a recliner or tilting bed is really nice. We have one of those motorized tempurpedics and I think that's the only time I ever used the tilt features. It was a lifesaver. I wasn't really comfortable laying flat on my back or sitting up. Good luck with it |
|
From the late night lawyer ads I saw a while back, you're fucked.
Hope it goes well, OP. Kharn |

Umbilical here. Very little discomfort. I was careful not to lift much.

Had an inguinal repair done 9/21/18.
Still have to be very careful to not do too much. Mine was an open repair as opposed to laparoscopic but the dr wasn’t kidding about his instructions. Your nuts are gonna be swole up, be very gentle with your sexy time, it’ll hurt for a week after doin the deed the first time after. Wear tighty whities or something similar for support, the vas deferens goes through the area of the repair and support is good. Proper lifting technique..... And stool softener ?? |

Old school repair, nice scar above my junk. No swollen balls and just took Tylenol; went back to work in less than a week with staples still in my gut.
Wasn’t horrible |

I had a double 20yrs ago before they had all these fancy terms.
I had a cut on each side of my package about 5" in length. I had the worst 3weeks of my life after it was over, never had pain like that before or since. Believe the one s who say to have stool softener every day and then some. Pain meds I'm sure they helped, I had some heavy stuff for the first week, 3 days in the hospital pressed the red button when ever I was awake. When I got home is when the hell started. |

I had the exact same operation back in May. It wasn't bad in terms of pain or recovery -- until I developed a blood clot in my lower leg.
This is something you need to be aware of, OP. For some reason these types of clots are more common in laparoscopic hernia repairs. And they hurt like a MF; I got up to use the bathroom in the morning and it suddenly felt like someone had taken a baseball bat to my leg. Seriously, ask your doctor about it before the operation. https://www.merckmanuals.com/home/heart-and-blood-vessel-disorders/venous-disorders/superficial-venous-thrombosis |

So far I have to look forward to pain, swollen balls, can't shit, maybe my junk will die and perhaps blood clots.
Maybe I should just keep the hernias. |
|
I had two done at the same time and quite frankly OP, it was horrible as some posters have mentioned. Had it done about 10 years ago and the left side still hurts on some days.
Free advice is worth what it costs but I will give you a valuable piece right here: DO NOT SNEEZE FOR AT LEAST 3 WEEKS Do anything you can to NOT sneeze. If you do, you'll be praying to die. And one last thing the doc told me is that you really need to get it done because if you are on a 2-4 hour flight and something gets strangled or constricted in your guts, it could be catastrophic. |
|
I had an inguinal repair 4 years ago, mine wasn't laproscopic. I hope lapro is better than the traditional surgery.
It sucked, as others said, the pain was really bad even with meds for several days and I didn't shit for 4 days. |

I literally had the exact thing ,one on each side. Minimal pain and was up and back to normal within a couple days but no lifting or physically straining stuff for 6 weeks . Oh yeah, I had a vasectomy done at the same time as the hernia so my balls were swollen regardless.

No, no, get it done, you'll feel a lot better later. We all survived it.

Wife had double umbilical hernia surgery 6 weeks ago.
Not too bad, can't lift anything for a while, abdominal pain. The worst if the fuvking druggies have made docs real shy about pain killers so they'll send you home under prepared to deal with the pain. |

Just remember- you asked......
Had an umbilical hernia two years ago. Surgery went well and they sent me home with a bottle of miralax which I took as directed. After three days- no poop but I sloshed when I moved. About 2200 hrs- I felt as if I was going to burst. Sat on the throne for about an hour. Suddenly- the dam broke and I expelled about a gallon of gray colored fecal matter and blood, along with over six inches of my colon. Couldn't get comfortable in any position- wife called an ambulance and they transported me on my face to the E.R. They'd never dealt with this condition. Put me in a room that had a standup shower- every few minutes, I'd bleed and expell more fecal matter. Doc kept telling me that I'd have to have surgery and probably wear a colostomy bag for the rest of my life. I asked him to prescribe the most powerful pain killer that I could stand. He did. I'd call for meds- had two I.V. bags running- get into the shower and start putting my parts back inside. It took me three days to get to the point where I didn't bleed every time that I passed either urine or feces. The doc took photos every day and brought other doctors to observe. I've been wounded twice in combat but this hurt worse. When they finally discharged me- I'd sit in a bathtub and use dissolved Epsom salts and a battery-powered paint mixer to agitate the solution. The end diagnosis was that they'd somehow gotten a kink in my colon. I'm still gun-shy when it comes to pooping- no pushing at all. Hasn't bothered me in over a year. |
