I went back and listened to audio.  While impossible to be certain, it sh=ounds heavy for 5.56.
I think they are using high power rifle means it was a .308.

How much stress was there killing and wounding so many people that he planned for some time?  He needed to ditch the rifle to blend in with decent people.

Don't think he could get the staccato/ high rate of fire he did with a 7.62 x 51mm. Or 7.62 x 39mm. 5.45 x 39mm? yup. But the noise signature makes me believe it's a 5.56.

Whenever I am around the shooting I always have ear pro on. I am not expert in the sound signatures.  These sounded heavy, not the crack with 5.56; but that is probably due to the effects of the streetscape on the shots in the audio.
You are probably correct; it is most likely another of those "high power" 5.56 rifles.
God help us when one of these nuts uses the real thing.

What we have learned from this all:

Gun control doesn't work, because the violent mentally ill, and criminals aren't going to follow the laws.

IL FOID (firearm owner's id) card, required to purchase/possess guns & ammo, & the 72hr. waiting period has had exactly zero effect on preventing crime, probably because only law-abiding people have it/abide by it.  The IL State Police reportedly background check every FOID card holder every day, hoping to find someone newly in the court system, that they can break down their door, and take their firearms from.

IL had to be dragged into CCW by the court system.  IL was the LAST state in the nation to adopt a ccw law, and the wild west shootouts by the law-abiding that democrats said would happen never materialized.

IL will probably try for a statewide AWB ban soon, because the recent "ghost gun" ban, the no-cash-bail, which goes into effect in Jan., and the licensing at the state level, in addition to the federal level of FFLs, (which has driven lots of FFLs out of business), just isn't doing enough to satisfy them.

Another fact:  The cities with the most gun control laws in IL, have the worst/most outrageous criminal activity.
Totally counter to gun control proponents' beliefs.

Chicago, and now one of only a couple IL towns that have an AWB, Highland Park, are just a couple of those areas that prove it.

Liberals say they want to fight crime in IL, but last time they re-elected Kim Foxx, Cook County's infamous State's Attorney, whose office is not always fighting to keep criminals in jail/prison, and they vote for judges that also don't want to keep people in jail.

The Highland Park mayor was running in the democrat primary just a week ago to be a justice on the IL Supreme Court.  Thankfully she lost her race, but we could still get a democrat justice in the general election if people don't watch out and vote.

I agree.  But the former governor had the ability to sort through all of the cases.  He didn't for whatever reason, want to do this.
After all, that's his job as gov., to read up on the cases, and decide if there is any doubt about anything, & then to not go through with carrying out the death penalty in that case.  But he shouldn't have taken a broad brush, and stopped all of the cases from going forward.

That is a shooting.  It's not the Highland Park shooting.

In the inital photos with victims it was clear this was no .22 lr or magnum for that matter.
Large through head shots.  Real ugly damage with lots of blood.  
Also, that young woman with grazed cheek (the luckiest girl alive today), that was at least a 5.56.  It looked a lot like the grze would to the head that the Bortac agent had in Uvalde.

That is not the Highland Park parade shooting.
