Plane crash caught on video following Winnie Rice Festival parade |

Looks like the pilot was taking off from a road and didn't have enough airspeed to gain altitude.

There's no such thing as gravity. It's just that the earth sucks.

That sign jumped out of nowhere
Eta: upon further investigation, it appears the pole jumped out of nowhere, the sign was across the street. My depth perception is as good as the pilots |

Looks like he lost tail authority and he wandered into the median. He Forced a takeoff and hit the street light. Looks like he dipped the nose as he saw the overhead power lines and caught the lower lines. In all.. I don't know what the fuck the pilot was thinking... Attached File I'm glad the photo uploader works so well. LOL! |

"“It was towed from the airport to be in the festival parade, and then they went to the parade, and then in lieu of towing it [back] because it looked like weather was moving in on them, they felt like it would be quicker-- the highway had been shut down for the parade--they felt like it was quicker to fly it, definitely not at the recommendation of the authorities or the festival,” Hawthorne said."

Pilot error, overconfidence, overestimation of the aircraft's abilities, bad planning?

My official SME finding is this: He ran out of Altitude, Airspeed and Ideas, simultaneously. It looked like the prop clipped the streetlight(?)
Although it’s very hard to tell from that short clip, it appeared that he wasn’t at max AOA, so maybe he did lower the nose to fly under the big power lines? Altogether; one of the dumbest stunts I’ve seen. Almost, (but not quite), as ‘tarded as the guy who tried to fly his home made high wing carbon fiber Turboprop bushplane in a 40 kt crosswind. |

The Stearman was called "The Yellow Peril" for a reason......

Y’all gotta zoom in. He clearly clipped a streetlight with the wing, followed promptly by a power line. Watch the pole on the right shake as he drops out of the sky. The sign was never involved.
Wondering if he knew that wire was there and thought he had the Vy, or just didn’t walk down his departure. I usually don’t Monday morning QB aviation accidents, but in this case: DUMBASS 10/10 |

Don't worry scro'! There are plenty of 'tards out there living really kick ass lives. My first wife was 'tarded. She's a pilot now.

I wonder if his insurance company has an out on this one. It wasn’t an emergency landing on a highway but a chosen path to take off from a highway when there was no need.
I would call him a dumbass for crunching the plane when it was entirely avoidable. |
