I am somewhere between the 96th and 97th percentile individually. I found out this year looking for new jobs I am leaving about $15K in total compensation on the table, which isn't too bad.
We live in a high cost of living area, and to be honest despite our success most days I feel like nearly everybody else is more materialistic. There are eight homes in my neighborhood, and ours is the smallest and cheapest. That's not to say there's anything at all wrong with it since it's a beautiful home. Income is all relative. If I were to take my salary and move it to a different area that's still tech-friendly (say Huntsville or outside) I could have 100 acres and a massive mansion on a hill with a pool and a guest cottage. If I were to stay here and spend like my father in law I could have a 30 year note on a go-fast boat and a new Range Rover, but then I'd have zero provisions for the future (no retirement or savings, no college savings for my kids, etc.). I was just raised differently. I am more on the frugal side than not, but I do not live on a shoestring budget like some of my friends (they live in a relatively dirty shack, but that shack is almost paid off and they've got 150K in cash in the bank). I am wired to pretty much not enjoy anything unless I did it, so I don't expand my house or upgrade things inside unless and until I have the time to do it right. |

Based on the OP's somewhat cryptic description, I assume he hauls hazmat for ORNL or similar. If so, in East TN, that kind of $ goes a long way.

I go more by what I spent for the year now, that was just over 20K for everything including car and house insurance, property taxes, food, utilities and fuel and fun stuff. I put around 55K into retirement funds between accounts, 401K and the like. Pension had 40 K dumped into it by the company.
As you can likely tell, I spent very little on gun stuff this year, just a bunch of .22 ammo. |

As a firefighter we work 2880 hours (10, 24 hour shifts per month). Everyone I know has a second job or business or well. Lots of guys have second fire or EMS jobs where they work another 10 shifts a month on a 24 schedule. I easily work over 400 hours a month.

Good year for a man with my limited intelligence.
I’m sure it’s nothing to do with me creating linked in profile just been paid first of three bonuses this one was 18% for hitting targets and coming in way under budget. Also got payrise and promotion and some other good news. But I’ve worked myself to death this year so if you add up all the hours it’s probably minimum wage. |

Sure....why not. I don't make enough to brag, but I don't make so little that I'm embarrassed...I consider what I make pretty good regular-man money....but that's it...just pretty good.
The high-fallutin' term for my trade is "stationary steam engineer", I'm a power plant operator...albeit a small one, I tell people I boil water and spin a wheel. My hourly wage is a bit over $35/hr. Night shift differential brings me to $40.47/hr Weekends are at time and a half and count towards my 40. Any hours on the 7th day are double time hours. I work holidays as they fall on to my schedule, weekends are every-other week, I work every minute of overtime I can get my mitts on. A normal year I'll gross in the $120,000 to $130,000 range. This year was a bizarre year for overtime, I'll finish up about $178,000 gross....I expect this year coming to drop back to normal. I live in the first town over the border into NH, Boston is only 30-ish miles to the south, so that money is good money for the area, but hardly a metric-shit-ton...plenty of trades people can make that. I live in an itty-bitty ranch style house on a whopping 1/4 acre. My bills are paid, I have two smaller pensions that are no longer contributed to, two 401k's...one no longer contributed to. I won't retire rich, but I won't be stuck on just SS either. |

So far, $186k gross. There's a strong rumor of a Christmas bonus, so that could go up a bit more.
We bought a home last January, and I had about six weeks out of work in March - two weeks to find a job, then about a month of waiting for onboarding (my choice; it was more convenient for everyone). I'm expecting next year to be around $150k, but it could be anywhere from $125k to $250k-ish, depending on how well the company does and whether or not there's a liquidity event of some kind. The median household income where I live is $29,988. I would say I don't understand how people can live on that, but I've done it myself. |
