What is the house worth, if its worth a million I’d say you’re fine but if it’s worth 50k you may be in trouble.

House can be liquidated and assets allocated to the pitfalls.

Sell your $140,000 house and buy a $60,000 house.  Pay off your student loans and put $50,000 in a retirement account.  You're allowed to sell your primary residence tax free once in your lifetime.  Do it now and put yourself in a better position for the future.

I'm 44 and happily single (divorced, no alimony nor child support).
I have no debt at all.
I have many diversified investments.
I have ever-growing retirement savings.
I have $75k cash savings.
My car is paid.
My house is paid, and I am buying rural acreage to shoot and hunt.
I have a job which has health benefits, offers a decent pension and pays $150k/year.
I retire in 5 years.

I have a genetic neuropathic condition that gives me the gift of severe neuropathy in my feet and hands, and I'm slowly losing strength in my extremities. I have a hard time with standing or walking long distances, have balance problems so climbing ladders is out, and things just randomly fall out of my hands. Thus far, I've avoided getting on disability, but those days are coming.

An Army career. All those high school teachers and guidance counselors and my parents told me to just get a degree, it didn't matter in what, and I'd be okay. Take out the loans, get the degree in whatever made me happy, and I'd be set and the money would follow. So I got a degree in something I enjoyed (history).

Live and learn.

You're way good dude, but you should be making more money annually which is absolutely achievable.  Crush the remainder of your student loan, and start putting money in the bank. Win for the rest of your life.

Is the hospital you work at a government run hospital or is it a non profit/religious hospital?  With your skill set you might be able to transition into some sort of government office job for the retirement and benefits.

There are a lot of folks that may make more money but they are in debt much more than their income.  If you can find a job in your location that is a good fit and you have a paid off home and paid off car that helps a lot.  Hopefully you can find something that offers a good retirement, health insurance, and time off work.  That's why I was thinking government may be a good fit.

OP, you're not screwed but you're in a precarious position and time is running out.

My mom lost everything at 40 years old, had to start over with no college education and nothing saved up, and a shitty house to pay for and a lot of medical bills. She made good decisions, got a good job and saved and she's retired now and doing well at 67.

You can't fuck around, tho, you have to act and get your ass into better income working towards it.

And I was going to start a thread asking if 3 million was enough for retirement.

With no debt/own house (will downsize in 20 years) etc.

You need to keep that house if it's worth in 20 years will see a great increase in price because that is all you have.

You are fucked unless you can increase you income/saving for retirement.

He may not qualify. One of my friends has CMT and he didn't qualify. I guess you have to be almost dead to qualify. He's now in a nursing home and doing very poorly.

Note to OP - Don't let my comments about my friend cause you anxiety. My friend has adjusted very poorly to his disease. He's depressed and given up. He now sleeps 80% of the day. I'm convinced his mental attitude is one of his biggest problems. His brain seems to be shutting down. You have a much better attitude. Get out and enjoy nature. Cultivate good friends. Find some hobbies you enjoy and don't sweat the nickel / dime stuff.

Rather than drawing disability there are other gov programs out there like vocational rehabilitation which could be a huge help to improve your station in life.

Although you may have to qualify as disabled first...

Paid off house and car are a big deal. It's why you're able to survive on so little money.

With zero savings and still carrying debt, you probably won't have a long, if any, retirement,
though when you get really old and have a couple years to live you might be able to do a
reverse mortgage or something similar.

I'd look to get a better job, pay down the student loans, and don't ever, ever let anything happen
to the house (e.g. cash out refi, HELOC, or any other nonsense.) Imagine where you are now
except with $1K/mo rent and you'll understand why.

The paid off car and house are a big deal.  Start making headway on the loans.

Put as much as you can and then more in to a 401k.  If you have an employer match, that's free money.

Get a roommate.

Take the rent and half the utilities and put 1/3 into your loans, 1/3 into a house repair/car replacement fund, and 1/3 into an IRA.

Just make sure they aren't a druggie or criminal.

You need to get a real job. If there are none in your area, move.

If you don't take care of your student loan debt, when you go on Social Security they'll deduct a payment from your SS check every month until it's paid off.

Personally, I'd look at selling my house, buying an RV to live in, and going where the work is. Seems as good an option as hanging out making minimum wage at your age is.

Good luck with it.

Theres a podcast called side hustle school. It literally has 100's ideas of things people do in their spare time to make money.  Some can make in the 10,000s that would be huge for you. I didn't read every page, but it looks like you have about $30k in debt, but have a $140k house free and clear... so your net worth is still over 6 figures, even with a $20k/yr income.  You're much better off than most, however, you need to start preparing for retirement.

As for job prospects, I recommend looking at training in some various trades (construction, machinist, welder, etc).  If you can teach, look into opportunities overseas that would also pay for your room and board.  You would be able to sock away some serious cash.  As the economy has started to recover in the USA, many people that were working abroad have started to come back, so there may be some good opportunities for you.  Good luck OP, keep us posted.

OP,

Could you rent the house, move into the apartment and come out ahead? I can see not wanting to sell the house, and I think it would be foolish to sell your only asset in your situation.

I think your better off finding a better paying job, or a job that allows over time over working multiple jobs.

Could you become a pharmacy tech? They make pretty good money up here in Oregon.
